Family Tragedy
foxnews.com/ ... 17:50:36
SELMER, Tenn... told police she knew her husband kept a 12-gauge pump-action shotgun in the closet of the home where they lived with their three daughters. She said she didn't remember getting the gun. "The next thing I remember was hearing a loud boom. I remember thinking it wasn't as loud as I thought it would be..." her husband rolled from the bed onto the floor... "He asked me why, and I just said `I'm sorry,"'... Matthew Winkler was shot in the back from close range with a 12-gauge shotgun as he lay in bed, with the blast breaking his spine and tearing into internal organs. "When she left, Matthew Winkler was still alive..." said she and her husband had argued throughout the evening about several things, including family finances. The problems were "mostly my fault," she said, because she was in charge of keeping the family books... "He had really been on me lately criticizing me for things the way I walk, I eat, everything. It was just building up to a point. I was tired of it. I guess I got to a point and snapped..." shortly before the killing, Mary Winkler had shifted money between at least two banks... "check kiting"...

In fact, Dougherty and Harris never even considered including "the American way" in their screenplay. After the wunderkind writing duo ("X2: X-Men United") conceived "Superman's" story with director Bryan Singer during a Hawaiian vacation, they penned their first draft together and intentionally omitted what they considered to be a loaded and antiquated expression. That decision stood throughout the 140-day shoot in Australia, where the pair remained on-set to provide revisions and tweaks. "We were always hesitant to include the term 'American way' because the meaning of that today is somewhat uncertain," Ohio native Dougherty explains. "The ideal hasn't changed. I think when people say 'American way,' they're actually talking about what the 'American way' meant back in the '40s and '50s, which was something more noble and idealistic..."

The basics: Don't confuse the apples with the apple cart. Net neutrality is but one part of an omnibus legislation phone companies are keen to see get passed so they can start doing things like offering pay-television services in competition with cable companies... In fact, in typical Congressional restraint, there are over 200 amendments. One vote yea or nay passes or kills the whole schmear, if you want to kill any one of the amendments you have to kill all of them, which means if you want net neutrality you have to do without competition for your pay-TV service and whatever the hell the other 199 amendments are -- marble and gold-plated bridges in Alaska that don't go anywhere, if Ted Stevens was in the room when it was being written. If phone companies could wave a magic wand they'd have the whole kit 'n' caboodle passed, and get to open a bidding war between large Net users -- Amazon, Yahoo!, Google, all those XXX and online gambling services nobody ever actually hears about but which are by far and away the most profitable things on the Internet and which'd quietly get way, way more profitable for whoever owns the broadband. Though the rains have largely ended in the region, the ground is saturated and roadways and streams in several states have become rushing torrents, deluging homes and businesses. The Susquehanna flooded parts of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., today, and emergency officials ordered 200,000 evacuated from there and surrounding communities in Luzerne County. The river also threatened to top flood walls in Binghamton, N.Y. Heavy rains undermined a section of Interstate 88 in Sidney, N.Y., 35 miles northeast of Binghamton, killing two truck drivers early this morning and forcing the closing of two highway bridges. The Roanoke River in Virginia, the Schuylkill in Pennsylvania, and the Mohawk and Neversink rivers and Esopus and Rondout creeks in New York also flooded, forcing evacuations of residents and inundating homes, offices and streets. The overflowing Cattail Brook in Livingston Manor, N.Y., suddenly swept one house entirely away. Officials said a 16-year-old girl was in the house, and is missing and presumed dead...

Later in his speech Tuesday, Dean appeared to backtrack. "I'm not asking to go back to the '60s; we made some mistakes in the '60s.... If you look at how we did public housing, we essentially created ghettoes for poor people" instead of using today's method of mixed-income housing... Another mistake Democrats made in the '60s, Dean acknowledged, was that "we did give things away for free, and that's a huge mistake because that does create a culture of dependence, and that's not good for anybody, either," he noted, a reference to the Great Society welfare programs created by Democratic President Lyndon Johnson in the mid-1960s...

Why are we asking this question now?
The head of the UN's anti-drugs office has said that cannabis use has turned into a major pandemic which is causing as much harm as cocaine and heroin. Antonio Maria Costa also implicitly criticised countries such as Britain for relaxing the law on the possession of cannabis. "Policy reversals leave young people confused as to just how dangerous cannabis is," Mr Costa said. "With cannabis-related health damage increasing, it is fundamentally wrong for countries to make cannabis control dependent on which party is in government. Today, the harmful characteristics of cannabis are no longer that different from those of other plant-based drugs such as cocaine and heroin..." The drug has a mild sedative effect but the experience depends greatly on individual mood and the social environment at the time it is taken. Some people get the giggles and become talkative, others become subdued and quiet - the classic symptoms of being "stoned". Many people feel less inhibited while under the influence of cannabis, in much the same way as drinking alcohol, which is why it is a common party drug...
