Customer demand has forced Microsoft to extend the shelf life of Windows XP by five months. Microsoft was scheduled to stop selling the six-year-old operating system on 30 January 2008 to leave the field clear for Vista. Now the date on which many sellers of XP will no longer be able to offer it has been lengthened to 30 June 2008. Microsoft said the change was to help those customers that needed more time to make the switch to Vista...

More than 100,000 people in Japan have rallied against changes to school books detailing Japanese military involvement in mass suicides during World War II... A killer amoeba living in lakes enters the body through the nose and attacks the brain where it feeds until you die... it's killed six boys and young men this year. The spike in cases has health officials concerned, and they are predicting more cases in the future... "This is a heat-loving amoeba. As water temperatures go up, it does better..." Naegleria fowleri (nuh-GLEER-ee-uh FOWL'-erh-eye) killed 23 people in the United States, from 1995 to 2004... The CDC knows of only several hundred cases worldwide since its discovery in Australia in the 1960s... Though infections tend to be found in southern states, Naegleria lives almost everywhere in lakes, hot springs, even dirty swimming pools, grazing off algae and bacteria in the sediment... people become infected when they wade through shallow water and stir up the bottom. If someone allows water to shoot up the nose - say, by doing a somersault in chest-deep water - the amoeba can latch onto the olfactory nerve... People who are infected tend to complain of a stiff neck, headaches and fevers. In the later stages, they'll show signs of brain damage such as hallucinations and behavioral changes... Once infected, most people have little chance of survival. Some drugs have stopped the amoeba in lab experiments, but people who have been attacked rarely survive... "Usually, from initial exposure it's fatal within two weeks..."

Internet access was restored briefly in military-ruled Myanmar on Saturday, a day after a Web blackout believed to have been imposed to stop reports and pictures of a major crackdown reaching the outside world... Internet users inside the former Burma were able to see domestic Web pages as well as send e-mails outside the country for a couple of hours before connections failed again... The widespread use of modern technology by protesters and dissident news networks is in stark contrast to 19 years ago, when reports of massive casualties from soldiers shooting into the crowds took days to leak out. But the generals appear to be getting more sophisticated in cracking down on dissent too. Unknown hackers bombarded the Web site of the Thailand-based Irrawaddy Magazine, a leading window into the secretive country run by exiles and funded by foreign donors, with viruses this week and shut down its main server. Automatic weapons. Check. Helicopters. Check. Dogs. Check. Bulletproof vests. Check. You may not buy the government's characterization of its campaign against medical marijuana patients as a "war on drugs," but increasingly violent, militaristic tactics in recent months offer a troubling glimpse into the federal law enforcement community's mentality:
To them, this is war...
By all accounts, Naulls ran his collectives with exemplary scrupulousness. He maintained strict dress codes and professional standards for all employees. He paid state taxes on the dispensaries -- amounting to several hundred thousand dollars a year -- even when loose tax regulations allowed other dispensary owners to slip through the cracks. Profits from the dispensaries went to local and national cancer organizations. Nevertheless, at 5:50 a.m., July 17, Naulls' home and businesses were invaded by DEA agents armed with shotguns, automatic rifles -- even helicopters. They seized everything he owned: his businesses, his property, all of his accounts. But that wasn't the worst of it. County child protective services came along on the raid and took Naulls' three daughters, aged 1 to 5, and charged him and his wife with child endangerment. They weren't even accused of breaking any state laws... Instead of calling it a war, perhaps there's a more accurate phrase to describe what we've witnessed from federal law enforcement this summer. How does "pogrom on medical marijuana patients" sound?..

Marcel Marceau,
the master of mime... has died. He was 84... breathed new life into an art that dates to ancient Greece. He played out the human comedy through his alter-ego Bip without ever uttering a word... Offstage, he was famously chatty. "Never get a mime talking. He won't stop," he once said... Michael Jackson borrowed his famous "moonwalk" from a Marceau sketch, "Walking Against the Wind..."
His father was sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp in 1944. "Yes, I cried for him," Marceau said. But he said he also thought of the others killed. "Among those kids was maybe an Einstein, a Mozart, somebody who (would have) found a cancer drug," he told reporters in 2000. "That is why we have a great responsibility. Let us love one another..."
Single-handedly, Marceau revived the art of mime...

History hasn't been kind to cannabis, a researcher at Dalhousie University lamented last year. The drug is one of the most used worldwide, but misconceptions about its therapeutic potential and safety continue. More research is on the way, but marijuana's true rehabilitation could come from, of all things, a new diet drug that works by deactivating the same therapeutic neural network in our bodies that marijuana activates... you have your own cannabis infrastructure, a grid of nerve receptors that changes your experience of pain, sleep and appetite. We all make our own natural cannabinoids, marijuana-like chemical compounds... researchers found the synthetic compound rimonabant, a cannabinoid blocker. (It switches off the same neural network that our own cannabinoids and marijuana turn on.) So long as you stay on it, the drug reduces appetite, blood sugar, waist size and weight (by about five per cent), while it raises HDL ("good") cholesterol... will limit prescribing it to fighting diabetes and cardiovascular disease...

After two weeks of denials, the New York Times acknowledged that it should not have given a discount to MoveOn.org for a full-page advertisement assailing Gen. David H. Petraeus. The liberal advocacy group should have paid $142,000 for the ad calling the U.S. commander in Iraq "General Betray Us," not $65,000, the paper's public editor wrote yesterday... The Times also violated its own advertising policy, which bars "attacks of a personal nature..."

Six Humvees rolled into one of the poor neighborhoods that share Baghdad's northern fringe with groves of date palms, and school teacher Mustafa Hassan climbed out to tears, hugs and kisses. Hassan had been detained by the U.S. military for five months on suspicion of involvement in insurgent activity, but his innocence was championed by an American paratrooper lieutenant and now he was being delivered home with respect. In this remote corner of Baghdad, soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division's 2nd Brigade, many on their third Iraq tour, are trying to leave their mark in a war defined as much by perceptions of conduct as by battlefield exploits. Hassan's case illustrates the competing needs of quelling violence and reaching out to Iraqis...
