Using the samples brought back from the rubble pile asteroid Bennu by the probe Osiris-REx, scientists now believe the asteroid formed in the inner solar system inside the orbit of Jupiter, not in solar system’s outer edge as previously theorized. … This theory might also explain as to why the Earth has so much water, forming also inside Jupiter. If so, this scenario challenges many other theories describing the formation of solar systems, which posit that the orbits of gas giants like Jupiter shift over time, drifting farther and closer to their stars as they accrete.
