There arent enough troops to do the job, many U.S. officials privately concede... As many as 4,000 additional U.S. soldiers will be sent to Baghdad, including two battalions of the Armys 172nd Stryker Brigade, four or five military police companies from northern Iraq, and a field artillery battalion that is in reserve in Kuwait... The frustration of returning to quell violence in the same places multiple times has taken a toll on American morale, undermined Iraqi confidence in the United States and cast doubt on the Bush administrations hopes of beginning significant troop withdrawals by the end of this election year... The top American military officer in Iraq, Gen. George W. Casey Jr., has said that such assertions are untrue. When ground commanders ask for more troops, according to Casey, they get them. In February 2003, the then Army chief of staff, Gen. Eric Shinseki, told a Senate committee that the force required to occupy Iraq would be "something on the order of several hundred thousand soldiers." Shinseki retired that June, ahead of schedule. Many U.S. officers think that Shinseki was pushed out of his position, and they took the episode as a warning not to request more troops...

For those either already using Firefox or are willing to download the final beta version of IE 7, the answer is less clear-cut. Opera certainly makes it easy to switch... Many of the features Opera pioneered, such as tabbed browsing and the ability to open multiple home pages, are available in the latest version of Firefox and in the beta version of IE 7. Both of those browsers have large developer and support bases to answer questions and create new add-ons. Because all three browsers incorporate many of the same key functions and because Opera has a smaller support community, Opera 9 is at a distinct disadvantage for gaining new adherents -- unless, of course, you are looking forward to using some of those cutting-edge tools. Then you may find yourself a quick download away from a different take on what a Web browser can incorporate...

The FBI estimates that today there are approximately thirty thousand violent gangs in the United States, with 800,000 members impacting 2,500 communities. Even more frightening, the Hispanic gangs in the U.S. have connected with counterparts in Mexico, Central America, and South America. The large Hispanic gangs in the U.S. are in the process of morphing into truly international gangs, causing legitimate concern for the international law enforcement and intelligence communities...

PROVO A man who says God told him to gun down a dozen people can't hope to be found "not guilty by reason of insanity" if tried in Utah. Neither could a Texas mother who drowned her children in a bathtub under the deluded belief that she was saving their souls from Satan. But that verdict is an option in Texas... However, Utah is one of three U.S. states that have abolished the wording in the traditional insanity plea so those accused of murder can't claim they didn't know their actions were wrong...

An ancient Irish manuscript found in a bog last week does not refer to "wiping out Israel", the National Museum of Ireland said on Thursday, after a flood of enquiries wondering at the timing of the discovery. The National Museum of Ireland announced on Tuesday what it said was one of the most significant Irish discoveries in decades; an ancient Psalter or Book of Psalms, written around 800 AD. It said part of Psalm 83 was legible. In modern versions of the Bible, Psalm 83 is a lament to God over other nations' attempts to wipe out Israel and many commentators wondered at the coincidence of such a discovery at a time of heightened tension in the Middle East... The confusion arose because the manuscript uses an old Latin translation of the Bible known at the Vulgate, which numbers the psalms differently from the later King James version, the 1611 English translation from which many modern texts derive... The vale of tears is in Psalm 84 in the King James version...
