The Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office (DPMO) announced today that the remains of four U.S. servicemen, missing in action from the Vietnam War, have been identified and will be returned to their families for burial with full military honors.
Air Force Maj.
Barclay B. Young,
of Hartford, Conn.
Air Force Senior Master Sgt.
James K. Caniford,
of Brunswick, Md
The names of the two others, also both U.S. Air Force, are being withheld at the request of their families. Caniford will be buried May 28 in Arlington National Cemetery near Washington, D.C., and Young's burial date is being set by his family. Remains that could not be individually identified are included in a group which will be buried together in Arlington. Among the group remains is
Air Force Lt. Col. Henry P. Brauner of Franklin Park, N.J., whose identification tag was recovered at the crash site. On March 29, 1972, 14 men were aboard an AC-130A Spectre gunship that took off from Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, on an armed reconnaissance mission over southern Laos. The aircraft was struck by an enemy surface-to-air missile and crashed. Search and rescue efforts were stopped after a few days due to heavy enemy activity in the area. In 1986, joint U.S.- Lao People's Democratic Republic teams, lead by the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC), surveyed and excavated the crash site in Savannakhet Province, Laos.... From 1986 to 1988, the remains were identified as those of nine men from this crew. Between 2005 and 2006, joint teams resurveyed the crash site and excavated it twice. The teams found more human remains, personal effects and crew-related equipment. As a result, JPAC identified Young, Caniford and the other crewmen....

Cartoons Count

Will Elder, 86, an early cartoonist for Mad magazine who spent 25 years illustrating Playboy's "Little Annie Fanny" strip, which parodied the magazine's fetish for buxom women, died May 15 at the Jewish Home at Rockleigh, N.J. He had Parkinson's disease. Started in 1952, Mad magazine became a popular antidote to conformity and good taste. With humor ranging from wry to blasphemous, Mad was credited with inspiring generations of satirists, including the Zucker Brothers, creators of the parody "Airplane!" and cartoonist Robert Crumb. It also paved the way for television programs such as "Saturday Night Live..." Visual puns were another specialty, such as the red, white and blue beanie he placed atop Wonder Woman's costume in a parody. Mr. Elder called such touches "chicken fat art," explaining, "It's the part of the chicken soup that's bad for you, yet gives the soup its delicious flavor..."

"Will Elder was absolutely brilliant," Mad writer-cartoonist Al Jaffee said. "He was the star from the beginning; he had a feel for the kind of satire that eventually spread everywhere..."

And it adds that the likelihood is even greater if the children themselves used the phones before the age of seven...

The Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office announced today that the remains of two U.S. servicemen, missing from the Korean War, have been identified and are being returned to their families for burial with full military honors.
Army Sgt. 1st Class
George W. Koon
of Leesville, S.C.
Army Sgt. 1st Class
Jack O. Tye
of Loyall, Ky.
Koon will be buried tomorrow in Leesville, and Tye will be buried Monday in Arlington National Cemetery near Washington, D.C.... In late November 1950, Koon was assigned to the Medical Company, 9th Infantry Regiment, and Tye was assigned to Company L, 38th Infantry Regiment. Both were members of the 2nd Infantry Division advancing north of Kunu-ri, North Korea. On Nov. 25, the Chinese Army counterattacked the Americans in what would become known as the Battle of the Chong Chon (River). This combat was some of the fiercest of the war, and the 2nd Division initiated a fighting withdrawal to the south. Koon and Tye were captured by Chinese forces during the intense enemy fire, and subsequently died while in captivity from malnutrition and medical neglect. In 2002, two joint U.S./Democratic People's Republic of Korea teams, led by the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC), investigated and excavated a mass burial site located 20 miles northwest of Kunu-ri, along the route taken by captured U.S. POWs being moved to permanent POW camps along the Yalu River. Recipients of Barr's largess have included some decidedly moderate, non-Libertarian types like GOP Reps. Christopher Shays (Conn.) and Deborah Pryce (Ohio) and Sen. Norm Coleman (Minn.). Barr also gave $1,000 last year to the presidential effort of a former Libertarian nominee, Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas), just a few weeks after he gave money to another White House campaign -- that of former Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore, who is now running for Senate. Further complicating Barr's post-partisan (or bipartisan? tripartisan?) stance, his last recorded PAC contribution, made in February, went to ... a Democrat: Rep. Tom Allen, a candidate for Senate in Maine. Of course, Barr's PAC has also given at least $8,500 to the Libertarian National Committee. So he's got almost all of his bases covered. The school collapsed so rapidly - one floor "pancaking" atop another - that there was practically no time to escape... All but a handful of the more than 900 upperclassmen were believed trapped under the slabs of cement, bricks, tile and twisted cables. Only one survivor has been found... Juyuan was a magnet school attracting the region's top students, ranging from seventh grade to ninth grade, many of them from isolated communities who boarded in an adjacent dormitory... Unless more survivors are found, the quake will have wiped out the school's entire graduating class and about half its student population... walls and support columns gave way almost instantly...

The Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office (DPMO) announced today that a small team of Japanese and U.S. specialists is visiting Attu Island, Alaska, in search of burial locations of the Japanese soldiers who are still missing from a 1943 World War II battle there.... The team's work on Attu Island will be supported by Army engineers from Ft. Richardson, Alaska, who will also employ ground-penetrating radar to help locate remains and guard against unexploded ordnance.... Attu Island is under the management and protection of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service which administers the Aleutian Islands National Wildlife Refuge....
...At the end of Alaska's Aleutian island chain, Attu is the westernmost point of land of the United States. In June 1942, a unit of the Japanese Army occupied Attu, capturing and imprisoning many of its inhabitants. U.S. forces began action to recapture the small island in May 1943, where fierce hand-to-hand battles led to about 540 American and 2,300 Japanese deaths. It was the site of the only land battle in WWII in North America.
In 1953, 235 sets of Japanese remains were recovered on Attu and reburied at Ft. Richardson, near Anchorage, Alaska. The Japanese later disinterred those remains, cremated them as part of a religious ceremony and reburied them at the same location....

defenselink.mil/ ... 12:43:56
The Defense Department announced today that charges against five of the six detainees who are alleged to be responsible for the planning and execution of the attacks upon the United States of America on September 11, 2001 have been referred to trial by military commission. Those attacks resulted in the death of 2,973 people, including 8 children. The referred charges detail 169 overt acts allegedly committed in furtherance of the 9/11 events. The accused will face trial in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.... In exercising her independent judgment, the Convening Authority, Ms. Susan Crawford, has referred to trial charges against Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, Walid Muhammad Salih Mubarak Bin 'Attash, Ramzi Binalshibh, Ali Abdul Aziz Ali, and Mustafa Ahmed Adam al Hawsawi. The five accused will be tried jointly, and the cases are referred as capital for each defendant, meaning they face the possibility of being sentenced to death. The Convening Authority has dismissed without prejudice the sworn charges against Mohamed al Kahtani. Because the charges were dismissed without prejudice, the government has the option of charging Kahtani separately, but he will not be tried with the other accused in this case.
The charges allege a long-term, highly-sophisticated, organized plan by al Qaeda to attack the United States. Each of the accused is charged with conspiracy, murder in violation of the law of war, attacking civilians, attacking civilian objects, intentionally causing serious bodily injury, destruction of property in violation of the law of war, terrorism and providing material support for terrorism. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, Walid Muhammad Salih Mubarak Bin 'Attash, Ramzi Binalshibh, and Ali Abdul Aziz Ali are also charged with hijacking aircraft.
The charges allege that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was the mastermind of the 9/11 attacks
by proposing the operational concept to Usama bin Laden as early as 1996, obtaining approval and funding from Usama bin Laden for the attacks, overseeing the entire operation, and training the hijackers in all aspects of the operation in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Walid Muhammad Salih Mubarak Bin 'Attash is alleged to have administered an al Qaeda training camp
in Logar, Afghanistan where two of the September 11th hijackers were trained. He is also alleged to have traveled to Malaysia in 1999 to observe airport security by US air carriers in order to assist in formulating the hijacking plan.
Ramzi Binalshibh is alleged to have lived with the Hamburg, Germany al Qaeda cell where three of the 9/11 hijackers resided.
It is alleged that Binalshibh was originally selected by Usama bin Laden to be one of the 9/11 hijackers and that he made a "martyr video" in preparation for the operation. He was unable to obtain a US visa and, therefore, could not enter the United States as the other hijackers did. In light of this, it is alleged that Binalshibh assisted in finding flight schools for the hijackers in the United States, and continued to assist the conspiracy by engaging in numerous financial transactions in support of the 9/11 operation.
Ali Abdul Aziz Ali's role is alleged to have included sending approximately $120,000 to the hijackers
for their expenses and flight training, and facilitating travel to the United States for nine of the hijackers.
Mustafa Ahmed Adam al Hawsawi is alleged to have assisted and prepared the hijackers with money, western clothing, traveler's checks and credit cards.
He is also alleged to have facilitated the transfer of thousands of dollars between the accounts of alleged 9/11 hijackers and himself on September 11, 2001....

Today members of Congress will press President Bush to halt purchases of crude oil by the Strategic Petroleum Reserve in a bid to do something anything to tamp down crude oil prices, which have doubled in the last year. The reserve, created in the aftermath of the 1973-1974 oil embargo, has been quietly stockpiling oil in the Louisiana Salt Caverns for three decades, with only a handful of pauses. Bush says the amount of oil being purchased by the strategic reserve about 70,000 barrels a day is too tiny to make any difference in oil prices. But members of Congress, including 16 Senate Republicans, say its worth a try. How did a suspension in purchases by the Strategic Petroleum Reserve become a cause célèbre in Congress? The idea has originated in large part with the Aspen, Col.-based oil consultant Philip K. Verleger. Those who are fed up with the liberal John McCain and disgusted by the lack of a conservative candidate in the race have at last found an answer. Former Republican Congressman
Bob Barr (R-GA) has decided to take up a run for President.
Barr was appointed as U.S. attorney for the northern district of Georgia in 1986, and has spent a lifetime supporting conservative causes, serving on the board of the N.R.A. and the American Conservative Union. He has worked closely throghout his career with colleagues including famed conservative leaders Paul Weyrich and Grover Norquist, as well as the noted conservative activist Richard Viguerie. As a Congressman, Bob Barr held a lifetime rating of 98 from the American Conservative Union, which is higher than the last two Republican House leaders, Tom Delay and John Boehner, who could hardly be called "liberal" themselves. Congressman Barr also has a higher lifetime rating from the A.C.U. than the Republican nomineee for president, John McCain. His rating from the National Right to Life Committee is also substantially higher. Barr is running as a libertarian after rightly leaving the Republican party in protest over the massive expansion of the Federal Government that has occurred since President Bush took office...

Temporarily disabling your antivirus software, which, Microsoft advises, may leave your computer "more vulnerable to attack by malicious users or by malicious software." o here was the plan: I'd hop a flight at six o'clock Friday evening, get into Vegas at around seven, take a cab to the hotel and check in, raid a buffet, head over to see Louise for the 8:30 show, then explore/enjoy Vegas until noon the next day (pausing briefly for sleep) before heading over to Lyn's store and, from there, to the airport and home. Nimbins biggest event of the year, the MardiGrass festival and cannabis law reform rally, will roll on this weekend despite moves by police to close the villages biggest tourist drawcards, the Hemp Museum and Hemp Bar, during the festival. Organisers of the 16th annual MardiGrass have questioned the timing of the move in the lead-up to the event, which draws thousands of tourists each year, and have criticised it as provocative. They have urged police to reconsider the decision to apply for a court order to close both premises for 72 hours. The move follows a controversial raid on the village on April Fools Day involving up to 50 police officers, including fully-equipped riot-squad officers from Sydney, at which eight arrests were made for cannabis offences and an amount of cannabis and cash was seized. HEMP Embassy president Michael Balderstone said police told him on Tuesday that, under the Restricted Premises Act of 1943, they would request a magistrate close the museum and bar because they believed drugs had been sold from the premises in the past. The act stipulates that, where police have reasonable grounds for suspecting the premises were being used for the supply of drugs or that drugs were kept on the premises, they could request the closure of the premises...

Consider the corrosive effect Wright and others like him have on their communities as they rob thousands of listeners of the American dream: hope that through their hard work they can have better lives. Imagine getting up each morning to go to work in a society that doesn't want you, doesn't respect you and seeks to hold you back. Your spiritual leader has told you this, after all. With powerful rhetoric, Wright has asserted, for instance, that white America sees black women as useful only for their bodies. If this is the message you got from your mentor, would you expect that you could succeed? Would you try very hard, if at all? Through my work with the Illinois governor's task force on human services reform and its efforts to reduce welfare dependency, I have encountered misguided community "leaders" like Wright who tell their followers, for example, that the job market is stacked against them and that the jobs that are available aren't good enough -- that they are entitled to more. The underlying message: You can't win because of who you are, regardless of what you do. I have attended positively focused black church services, and I know that the Rev. Wright does not speak for a monolithic black church. But I also recall a conversation I had during a visit to the maximum-security prison in Joliet, Ill. As I sat in the library there, talking with three men about why they were incarcerated, one man said: "Look around this room -- almost everybody here is black. This is white man's genocide. You put us in here to keep us down." Where would this 20-something black man, or other relatively uneducated young people, get such an idea? From the vitriol spewed by the Rev. Wrights of this world...
