Scientists believe they may have glimpsed a "law of war" that can be used to predict the likelihood of attacks in modern conflicts, from conventional battles to global terrorism... an international team has developed a physics-based theory describing the dynamics of insurgent group formation and attacks, which neatly explains the universal patterns observed in all modern wars and terrorism... "Although wars are the antithesis of an ordered system, the datapoints for each war fell neatly on to a straight line..." "We can use the power-law distribution to accurately predict the likelihood of different sized attacks occurring on any given day. This is useful for military planning and allocating resources to hospitals. However the strength of the approach goes beyond simple statistics. By using the power-law distribution we can understand how insurgent cells form and break apart and how the insurgency as a whole is structured. Then by tracking the slope of the power-law, we can see in real-time how the structure of the insurgency changes in response to external actions such as the surge in Iraq..."

Iran has moved ballistic missiles into launch positions, with Israels Dimona nuclear plant among the possible targets... Army Sgt.
Edward J. O'Brien,
of Omaha, Neb., will be buried July 2 in Minneapolis, Minn.... In late November 1950, O'Brien was assigned to E Company, 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, then deployed north of the Chongchon River, along the main road running south out of Unsan, North Korea. On Nov. 26, the Chinese army struck the U.S. and Republic of Korea (R.O.K.) forces during the Battle of the Chongchon River. As a result, U.S. and R.O.K. forces, including the 35th Regiment, were forced to withdraw to the south. O'Brien was last seen when opposing forces overran his company's position about 10 miles southwest of Unsan. In 1998, a joint U.S./Democratic People's Republic of Korea team, led by the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC), excavated a site containing the remains of a U.S. soldier who died south of Unsan in the general vicinity where O'Brien was last seen. The team found human remains and two military identification tags with O'Brien's name on them. A North Korean national told the team that he first uncovered the remains while constructing his house, and that he buried them at the nearby site which was excavated....

Clark was reported missing on Nov. 2, 1950, and was one of the more than 350 servicemen unaccounted-for from the battle at Unsan. Between 1991-94, North Korea turned over to the United States 208 boxes of remains believed to contain the remains of 200-400 U.S. servicemen. Among several boxes turned over in 1993, one contained a dog tag for Clark, and the accompanying North Korean documents indicated that the remains were exhumed near Chonsung-Ri, Unsan County, North Pyongan Province. rowdsourcing is a term coined by Wired Magazine writer Jeff Howe about the rise of mass amounts of undefined outsiders in the development of a companys project. For example, Wikipedia and Youtube are prime examples of the crowdsourcing phenomenon. Youtube relies on crowds of video makers to garnish its site with the latest videos that will entertain its audience. Wikipedia relies on the work of common folks in order to develop its encyclopaedia. Is there a crowdsourcing equivalent in the comic book world?.. There is. The rise of the Web comics portal is a prime example of crowdsourcing at work. In June 2006, comic book author Warren Ellis announced that he would launch a Web comics portal where other creators could publish their comic strips series, possibly next to Ellis.' While Ellis was hoping for a few responses from the comic book creating community, he probably did not expect the deluge or responses and enthusiasm from creators around the world who wanted to share the spotlight with him...

An Oregon man, given less than a year to live, had a complete remission of advanced deadly skin cancer after an experimental treatment that revved up his immune system to fight the tumors... the only success in a small study, leading doctors to be cautious in their enthusiasm... two years after his remarkable recovery, the patient fell out of contact with researchers and scientists do not know his current condition... researchers have focused on souping up a certain kind of immune system cell - the "killer T cells" that envelop and kill foreign agents... focused instead on specific helper T cells that are adept at locking onto a cancer cell and guiding the killer cells to their target. The researchers drew blood from patients, located the special helper cells and then grew more of them in the laboratory. They then infused roughly 5 billion of the cells back into the patients - without chemotherapy or the other harsh drugs...

The brains of people with... Alzheimer's disease... are cluttered with a plaque made up of beta-amyloid, a sticky protein. But there long has been a question whether this is a cause of the disease or a side effect. Also involved are tangles of a protein called tau; some scientists suspect this is the cause. Now, researchers have caused Alzheimer's symptoms in rats by injecting them with one particular form of beta-amyloid. Injections with other forms of beta-amyloid did not cause illness, which may explain why some people have beta-amyloid plaque in their brains but do not show disease symptoms...

Today only small numbers of Ainu remain, and they constitute one of Japan's most marginalised groups. On Friday they will have something to celebrate. Japan's parliament is to adopt a resolution that, for the first time, formally recognises the Ainu as "an indigenous people with a distinct language, religion and culture". In a nation that has always preferred to perceive itself as ethnically homogenous, it is a highly significant move... "It has taken the Japanese government 140 years to recognise us as an indigenous people..." There is no definitive theory as to where the Ainu came from... when the Meiji government came to power in 1868, the pace of Japanese settlement increased. Ainu land was redistributed to Japanese farmers. Ainu language was banned and children put into Japanese schools. Japanese names became compulsory. Finally, in 1899, the Japanese government passed an act which labelled the Ainu "former Aborigines". The idea was that, henceforth, they would assimilate. This act stood for almost 100 years...

Phoenix's primary camera is the Surface Stereo Imager (or SSI, the adorable Johnny 5-looking piece shown above). It's actually a new and improved version of a similar camera used for the Mars Pathfinder mission. It consists of a housing mounted a little over six feet above the surface (simulating human height), containing two stereoscopic lenses (simulating, you guessed it, human eyes), which can each capture a 1024x1024 (one-megapixel) image on a

CCD sensor. The SSI can be rotated 360-degrees around the craft, as well as panned vertically for images of the sky and soil... ne measly megapixel? Monochrome sensor? But these "limitations" are by design. Resolution wise, the cameraphone in your pocket can probably capture more megapixels than Phoenix's main imager.
