creeper: My favorite Pogo quote: "We have met the enemy...and he is us."

I'm partial to the quote I abused above, but I have a poster of "met the enemy" hanging on the wall in the office. Pogo standing in a trash-littered swamp - kind of earth-day AmerInd-shedding-tear theme, but, then, Walt Kelly was not as wise as his main character. !!

creeper: WTF explains this? Are we a nation of schizophrenics?

I believe the current term is "bi-polar." And, yes.

!

I think, altogether, some people are far too anxious and easily disturbed about political shenanigans. To paraphrase the wise old philosopher, Pogo:

Don't take life politics so serious.
It ain't no-how permanent.

Misanthropic Humanitarian: I blame myself on this FS.

As I always told my kids, the important thing is that we find someone to blame. Although, usually, preferably, make it someone not in the room.

...I've been keeping presidential news out of the dump on purpose to avoid this. But, then I lead the dump with the Cruz news. I won't do this again.

Well, to be fair, Cruz's VP pick was hard to avoid as news. They can't all be rescue dog, PO'd Putin, and drunk pilot/mail carrier stories.

Seamus Muldoon #114: ...These threads are full of lots of important Cruz and Trump bashing going on that should not be derailed with frivolities.

Today's the first day in a while that I've been up early enough to participate in the morning threads. I've been scanning them, though. For some reason (*cough Carly cough*) today seems to have brought out the circular firing squad more than I've seen lately.

I had some thoughtful thoughty thoughts about the primaries, the general, and stuff, but I am discouraged from sharing, just because of the level and volume of argument. Smells like somebody knocked over the barrel.

I'll just say, with bitterness:

I still like Ted, warts and all.
I'd settle for Trump over any Dem.
I fear fraud and ignorance will triumph in the general.

Can those of us who are interested but forgot to express it also read it?

BTW just count me as interested always, expressed.

Cato - thanks for the clarification on IP "classes."

Sorry about the lack of response earlier on the classed/classless IP thing. I was getting ready for work and didn't think to check back. In case you check back, I'll try to explain it.

Basically, early in the days of the internet, IANA, the organization that was formed to keep IP addresses sorted, would give out addresses in job lots with what was called a class license. The Class A licenses gave you about 16 million addresses, Class B's gave you 65,534, and Class C gave you 254. The exact numbers were due to the magic of binary numbers. Unfortunately, this was extremely inconvenient.

Not only was IANA not careful about how they handed out the class licenses, but they were also in inconvenient sizes for real-world users. Suppose you're an ISP with 2 million subscribers. Do you get 1 Class A, or a whole bunch of Class B's? Most of them got a single Class A, and let the unused addresses go to waste... and since IP addresses are now a precious resource, they guard their class licenses jealously and refuse to trade.

IPv6 does away with that. No more class licenses, every device generates a much longer, unique address that's based on your regional backbone servers, your ISP, and your network card's MAC address, and there's such a ridiculous amount of combinations that we'll (hopefully) never use them, or they'll have to do something that has an even more ungodly amount of possible combinations...

That's a wrap for me, overnighters. See you in the Future!

Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.

You mean like glue, I presume. My first thought was of something more like concrete. Not exactly the best material for a window repair.

Wish I could remember everything I ever knew, 'cause it seems like there is such a thing. Oh, well. Someone in the Galactic Horde Knowledge Base will be along to answer, possibly before I can post this.

Slapweasel #361: I'm a forty-five year-old "kid" with grudges and idealistic tendencies that don't always agree with Biblical lessons.

Nice comment, Slap. Of course, I just scour the Bible for stuff. Psalms mostly. Find something worthwhile in almost every Psalm.

Not quite 20 years older, but still feel like a kid struggling to follow the Master's instructions.'

chemjeff #300 mindful webworker, I am sorry for whatever you are going through

Aw, thanks. But, nothing a few inexplicable miracles won't cure. Like everybody else.

Seriously, I always remember, as Arlo talked about, that there's always some other guy worse on his luck. (Santa Claus song, worst-off guy in the world can always at least manage to get the attention of the FBI. https://youtu.be/17gKw_j6Qq0 )

Wish there was a cure for stupid, though.

For my next trick, a quick commute and a hash change.

Cato the Rebel: ...IPv4 has billions of addresses and wasted a lot of them with classing. IPv6 is classless and has something like 340 undecillion addresses....

What does "classing"/"classless" mean in this case? In relatively technically-informed layman's terms?

chemjeff: mindful webworker what's going on?

Hi, CJ. Nothing that hasn't been going on, with increasing deterioration, for the past 20 years. Some nights it gets to me worse than others. Nothing serious, seriously.

I will sing of the mercies of the Lord for ever: with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations.

That's so body normative-ist ... or, something.

Did anyone already mention the refutation of last night's article about the collapse of the magnetosphere? A software glitch. So they say, anyway:
