Took 'til comment #10 to mention whiskey. MTF for teh win, and in before the flood of mentions of the obvious. (Even a dullard like me thunk of it the moment I hit the word "rye"?)

Had to go all the way to #26 to mention catcher, though. Honorary mention for Diogenes.

Thank heavens they were mentioned in the correct order or I'd be worried.

Speed-reading through the morning comments, so many replies come to mind, but they're all piled up like cop cars in the Blues Brothers movie.

This one emerges.

Used to say, a liberal was a conservative who hasn't been mugged yet. Thinking was, you can't reason a person out of a position he didn't reason himself into, but experience will teach.

But as No-Borders gang-raped women show, even the hardest experience isn't enough.

Okay, it wasn't much of a comment, but I've only had one cup of weak hotel coffee.

Oh, here's another weak comment, since I'm here.

The AmThinker article "Was the Oregon mass shooting an Islamist attempt to assassinate Alek Skarlatos?" I read the entire speculative thing, and although I picked up a few details I hadn't known, mostly it just echoed what some commenter here said in a sentence or two right after the shooting.

Horde for teh win.

Morning, Glories!

Now, did I do the Willow, or did I beat the next thread?

Piercello: That's really cool. Thanks for the info.

Does it really count as the "oldest" church in the Western Hemisphere, even though it was moved here?

That sick wet splat you just heard is me hitting the wall. At full speed. I'm all right. I'm allllll right....

Good night, Gracies.

qdpsteve: Michael Nesmith... sounds almost as if he could be a moderate conservative.

His band, First National Band, had a trilogy of albums, red, white, and blue. I (think I) remember playing some cuts from one of them on the college radio in the early '70s.

Good songwriter, good singer, with a country edge. Odd to see that 2013 photo of him on Wikipedia. He got old.

Makes me feel old. Oh, right, I am.

Vertov: Iron Curtain speech.

Riiight!

"On March 5, 1946, Winston Churchill spoke at a small college in Fulton, Missouri. This famous speech, officially called The Sinews of Peace...."

Not the original use of the term "Iron Curtain," but popularized it, and the powerful meaning thereof.

Jinx the Cat: Missouri... the curious collection of billboards advertising sex shops, gambling and Winston Churchill...

Didn't see any Churchill (what was that famous speech he gave at a Mo. college?), but the sex store billboards hit as soon as you roll into the state on I-44.

First one I saw tonight had the tagline "Sinful Sensations." Reminds me of the old pre-Playboy days when the girlie mags would have names that invoked sin, the devil, and the like. Compare with the recent casino billboard in Oklahoma, "Good clean fun" - suggesting, it's not a sin, it's not dirty, it's good, and clean, and fun to throw your money away.

Jesus save us.

Which is the place to mention #5 and my final road observation so I can quit my highway-buzzed rambling and finish reading the post and some comments before I crash:

Passed a sign for a Missouri state highway called

UU

Thought it was an ad for Hooters.

Alberta Oil Peon: Their slogan... [I can't recopy it, really!] No kidding.

Oh, thanks for that! I knew it could only get worse.

Not really a road observation, but observed tonight while on the road #4

The kids will be home tonight, so, Milady texted them, "Tell our doggie we'll be home tomorrow."

Milady's cell is Windows. Apparently, it attempts to predict not just what word you're typing, but also the next word you might want after you've entered a word.

There was only one word offered after she typed "doggie."

Yes, that's right.

"style"

ManWithNoParty: Well, as you are apparently posting here while driving, they may have a point.

Of course I'm not posting while driving.

When I'm driving, I've got one hand on a sandwich and the other on a beer. I'd have to post with my nose. Or.. something.

Road remarks #3 - Mid-Missouri, there's a big billboard for (brace yourself)
Uranus Fudge Factory
I am not making that one up.

We did not investigate.

Observations from the road

#2 - We noted as we traveled that they just aren't making the old single-floor drive-up-to-your-room motels anymore. They're building hotels.

Milady mentioned this to the desk clerk tonight, and he confirmed, "They're just not as safe" as hotels where you have to walk in through the lobby.

Did not discuss the meaning or context of "safe," but I think we can count it as another example of cultural deterioration.

Howdy, Horde! Homeward bound at last. Got some observations from the road to serve up while fresh in mind.

#1: Two big semis, one in each lane, right behind me - and I mean frighteningly close behind me - while speeding over the Missouri hills.

What the ever-lovin' heck do they expect me to do? Speed up? Slow down? No, Mr Bond I expect you to die?

JohninMd: I say again, God DAMN you, Chris Muir, for making me react like my own flesh and blood are in that car…..

Testimony to the full fleshing-out of characters in this strip. (No pun about the flesh shown intended.) This whole sequence is "oh, $#!+." But no surprise that we care about fictional characters - Just in the SF genre, there's the inspiration of (the old) Superman's ideals (so wonderfully shown in Iron Giant); our care about Frodo succumbing to the ring; hell, even Dobby's death, contrived as it seemed, much less the human characters.

Yeah, her bloody hand - when I first glanced at the strip, I was thinking maybe it was oil from the car or something. Then, reading the strip, the gut-wrench.

Just caught the last 3 days' worth - and glad I didn't see them on-time and have to wait for the next one. Seeing the kid in front of the car was truly scary. Pretty gals aside, it's so much a talking-politics thread, it's a treat to see your work on a serious action sequence. The car flipping was excellently illustrated. Whew.

If anyone had read my comments this week, you would know that we're in Chicago for remembrance of my brother-in-law Vince. Interred his ashes yesterday at the cemetery on the South Side where five generations of family are buried.

Vince was "only" a bartender. If you don't count his published novel, his poems and other writings, his sketches and paintings. Here's a sample of his work I thought the Horde would appreciate.

Anna Puma: November is... National Novel Writing Month....

Just as we go off of Daylight Saving Time.

Coincidence?

Not likely!

(?? Even I don't know why I wrote that.)
