Ha! Great post to read because... I'm in Chicago this week! Milady's eldest brother died, day before yesterday, and we'll be staying 'til the weekend's memorials.

I haven't been here for a decade. Don't quite have my "Big City" braincells going yet, and may not before we leave. Had to ramp up my "insane road rally" mind to drive into the city, though. Some things are nicer. Most things are worse, and that goes double (or more) for the traffic.

Can't believe we lived here for fifteen years! We were so young and foolish 'way back in '80.

Certainly a different mind-set than home. Gotta watch my tongue!

Especially liked the last Cubs victory parade poster!

...Told his friends "You know the law of averages says:
Anything will happen that can"
That's what it says
"But the last time the Cubs won a National League pennant
Was the year we dropped the bomb on Japan"

Then I notice the Barnhardt link has already been mentioned and I figure I might'z well go lurk 'til I can get home and stay caught up.

Aaaand... this thread is old. Sigh.

naturalfake: Was there a coup at the Vatican?

Ann Barnhardt wrote on this the other day. Ann's a bit... radical... so I'm sometimes unsure hot to take her. Interesting to see this news becoming more mainstream.

If Cardinals committed excommunicable acts to bring in Francis and get rid of Benedict, might it be like violations of law under Obama and Holder - I mean, who's going to prosecute?

Not my church. But everybody's problem.

Gosh, this is like normal, commenting on sociopolitics on Ace. Might be the last time I get to touch normal this week!

Jumping in without yet following any headlines, or reading comments, or the morning thread, to say:

Morning, Glories, from the glorious People's Republic of Chicago!

OM, I really appreciate your style of discussion that connects themes and casually incorporates the book links. Almost makes books seem like a normal part of life!

Also, Oberlausitzische Library Of Science? That's a magnificent place. If we could un-box and un-stack all our books, I think we'd need about that much shelf space...!

For those who might've seen my morning messages the other day, we were hoping, but not expecting, to get to Chicago before Milady's brother died, and we almost made it; he gave up the ghost last night while we were on the road in the middle of Illinois. My thoughts about Vince from the other morning:

And just so's this isn't off-topic, and I've meant to do this for months, here's an Amazon link to Vince's book, The Confidants (which link, if I did it right, should kickback to Ace). Milady says it's a fun, Chicago-based mystery.

Carry on, readers.

Amazing to me that these geezers with their classic cars can have them in pristine, immaculately restored condition... yet some seem unable to fix the muffler!

Oh, uh, under 100? McConnell something something on topic.

Grey Fox: Speaking as someone who does where a hat as a regular thing, it is a real pain to remember to take it off where appropriate and carry it around. Lost a hat just the other day - I think I left in on the counter of a shop.

Hat and coat hooks. Used to be everywhere. Now you have to cram the hat down on the seat beside you.

My favorite was leaving my hat ('though I didn't know where) at a New Mexican restaurant in Tulsa. Months later, we went back, and there was my hat sitting on top of a big fake sagurro (sp? the ones that look like people with their arms out) cactus.

Just took a walk around the motel parking lot. Big Classic Cars gathering here. Old geezers all around, carefully wiping and dusting off their amazing vehicles. Beautiful machines. Really amazing Comet parked in front of my room (taking up three spaces so I had to park down a ways, but I'll grant him some slack).

Morning, Glories!

Say a prayer for travelers. I'm on the road for the first time in over a decade.

I'd forgotten how horrible traveling can be!

Oh, I mean great.

JJS: New post up at Cut Jib.

Hey, I finally got subscribed! Plug-in on Opera didn't recognize it on the page, but I typed it in manually.

Now I can stay caught up autonomically.

I'd be kinda lost without newsfeeds.

Or can we still come here to relax and get away from all the excitement that the deck chairs have been moved?

That's when the SHTF and he'll let the next guy face it?

I think morning threads are much meatier when they start off with Vic News, don't you? Thanks, Vic. And MP4 for the newspaper link (and the silent star gal; sad demise). I had so many comments to make about what I read in the last half-hour. All forgotten now.

Morning, Glories!

Looks like a road trip is in order starting this morning; we spent yesterday preparing. Haven't traveled myself in years. I'm out of practice. However, I can still just throw everything I need in a suitcase in a few minutes while Milady is still deciding among four purses. Men/Women

I like a nice drive, but I kinda wish they hadn't ruined air travel.

What? 500 comments on an art post, and there is no mention of Waldo or rape? I don't know who you people are!

At least someone mentioned the sniper.

Is it going to be like this all the way to the conventions next year? to the election?

If we even get that far.

Dark purple clouds on the eastern horizon, underlit with red from the still-hidden sun, scattered against an increasingly-light-blue sky. Great white clouds of fog lift off the pasture. Birds chirp in all directions. And the coffee's brewed. I've had worse moments... and surely will today!
