Re books for young'n's, IIRC, Asimov early in his career did a series of books for kids, which should be good straight-up SF.

IIRC. Man, it's been getting close to half a century since my steeped-in-SF yout'. Biomemory is an unreliable tool. Mine is, anyway.

From Milady's reads this week:

Len Slye had been an adoring fan of Will Rogers for years. And he and his co-workers were surprised and pleased one day in 1935 when they received word that Will was a fan of "The Sons of the Pioneers" and hoped they could appear with him at a Salvation Army benefit at San Bernardino. When the evening arrived and the program was over, Will shook hands all around, thanking the boys warmly. "I won't be seeing you for a while, fellows," Will Rogers said. "I'm taking off tomorrow with Wiley Post for Alaska."

(For those who may not know, the famous commentator and the famous aviator never returned. I've been to the lake where they went down.)

Len Slye later became famous as Roy Rogers, and "because of the name and his own homespun qualities and his own grass-roots language, he would often be mistaken in the future for the great American humorist's son."

Morning, Glorious offspring of our paternal Deity.

Thanks for an early early thread, Krak.

Funny to read folks complaining about the weather everywhere. Too cold. Too hot. We can compare ourselves to everywhere in the infrawebz age.

Gramma said, back when, they didn't know how hot it was because they didn't have somebody on the radio squawking about it all the time. If it got to hot to work, you sat under the shade tree with an iced tea.

We've got near-100° days and 70° nights in mid-July in Oklahoma, so, yeah, I'm thinking, that's another sign of impending ice age.

just saying does Weirdave the cliffnotes version: Obama is the pointy end of the spear....

Muldoon gets to the heart of things.

Against this illusory strength that is based in fear we have but the courage of our own convictions.

Endeavor to persevere.

Kindltot: Torque, there is a difference between regimented unity forced on by the power to exclude, sanction and punish, and there is unity which is a community of individuals who have common goals who work together to try to accommodate them. This conflation of terms causes problems...

Thanks for tackling that one. I was trying to.

I think the distinction you're elucidating here is between unity (as in e pluribus unum) and uniformity. They are absolute opposites.

Spellcheck on HDMI2DVI: Any nominees for the best cheap adapter brand?

I don't have the source here on the traveling computer, but I just this week received a pair of gold-platey HDMI-female-to-DVI-male adapters for about $6, via Amazon.

Alas, I was not realizing that my 1366x768 maximum resolution would not expand-to-fill the DVI screen on my 1920x monitor the way my 1280x analog desktop video output does. That is to say I got, digital clarity but letterboxed on four sides. If there's a setting I'm missing on computer or monitor, I can't find it. (But I only spent $6.)

Mr Wizard: Biblegateway has come a long way over the years...best bible site on the innertubes

Once I found Biblegateway, I never felt a need to look elsewhere. I like how it retains which version you want through all answers (KJV for this old-schooler).

[some dude:] ...what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?
[Jesus:] ...if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.

Another resource for Jesus researchers is The Five Gospels Parallels with which you can compare passages across the different gospels (incl Thomas).

Truman presided when I was born, but shortly thereafter Ike took office, so he was my President as a yout'. So, that's a dozen, right, if we count TFG as an actual pResident.

Mr Wizard: My Dad was born in 1920 so that's 17...

Mom was born in 1920. I may see her today, to share this. Over 1/3 (as Muldoon calculated). Thanks for saving me the counting-up and long division!

VIA: ...I stumbled across this Alfonzo Rachel guy, who is a part of PJTV.

Zo has been around for a while. I used to watch all his videos, but at some point he just wasn't meeting my infotainment needs, and I quit watching as a rule, just checking him sometimes depending on his subject.

Sometimes I think these guys need to be edited down to about half the length they take to make a point.

IIRC, Zo was a doper and maybe a gangbanger until the day he put it all down for Jesus. He covers his conversion in at least one of his vids.

Morning, Glories.

I'm depressed and angry over my cousin's dying last night, untimely, as I see it. although she was "elderly" and her health was failing for months.

Theologically, God cannot be wrong, so I can't cuss at him about it, but I'm... let's just say I'm not a very contented son this morning.

Whatever the purposes of prayer, getting a "yes" answer is apparently low on the list.

Checked in with my grief to the ONT, while the nightwalker crowd was in full Friday-night force, and apparently just before everyone went to bed. I received much comforting support & commiseration. I'll thank God for that, then.

Nope, nope, nope. The fast-paced beat, the slick production, the clear audio, reveal the truth. This is no "oldie." This is one of those made-up-recently fake "oldies." Before 1960s Oldies stations faded away, I'd frequently hear songs that, I swear, nobody ever heard in the 1960s. Fake oldies is a big business. They're messing with your heads, folks. Don't believe any of this. I was there, young'n's *wheeze* and I can tell you *cough* be right back...
