Life in the great outdoors. Two tales.

We used to have a big swimming pool at this ranch when we were kids, and one thing I always hated there was horse flies. I still remember one horse fly buzzing me, and I swam the length of the pool underwater, came up, and wham! he bit me. I hate horse flies.

I've noticed in recent years, we seem to not have some bugs I remember from my youth. Yellow jackets used to be plentiful, never see 'em, anymore. Horse flies are far fewer, and I don't miss 'em. Might be the years of drought.

So this morning, I'm standing out front, petting the dog, enjoying the morning view, when a huge horse fly starts buzzing around my head. 'Round and 'round and 'round Zzzzz Zzzzz ZZZZZ.

Unlike houseflies, horseflies will not be waved off. I duck down and head for the door, where I turn and see the horsefly following me toward the door, threatening to come inside. I grab a fly swatter. This is war.

Swish, a miss. He's full grown, warmed up, and fast. Swish, another miss, and another, but then, thwack! Contact! A solid hit! Took me a while to find the body, but it was a killer hit. Victory! I take pride in modifying the local gene pool in this way.

I'm selective about genetic control. Ladybug in the house? We scoop it up and carry it outside. Wasps in the house? They're usually just mud daubers and get mercy.

A few days ago, I found a two-inch cockroach sitting i the cup we use to scoop out dog food. Now, I hate cockroaches, but this one was trapped and I decided to have mercy and throw him outside. I open the back door, shake him out of the cup, and I see him fly away, then he turns back, lands in the dirt, and crawls swiftly to the back door, where he crawls under a crack in the door frame. Wow. Smart bug.

Fortunately, right by the back door is the shelf where we store the chemical warfare weaponry. The bottom of the door frame got a swift, saturating dose of Raid. Take that, you miserable insect, and I'll never show mercy on one of your kind again!

What with trolling, deletions, and repeating posts, this is like a roller coaster ride this morning. Wheee!

Urp.. I don't want a roller coaster ride in the morning.

Morning, Glories! Fog on the pasture, sun on the underside of the trees, dog and cats lolling on the drive. Life has its moments.

Laurie David's Cervix: ...bacon on special for $1.49 a pound. Just about to expire bacon, one would guess.

Seventy thousand pounds of bacon lost!
How will this accident affect the cost?

Bacon prices are already so murky,
we can only afford "bacon" made from turkey.

Bacon-flavored strips
of pressed and refried bird.
Along with birds-to-be, fried eggs,
it seems a bit absurd.

Sliced turkey in the omelet
and now it's safe to say,
It's bird bird bird for breakfast
all the way.
Oh yay.

And while discussing diets
limited by costage,
have you seen the prices lately
on good sausage?

(sorry about that last one)

Using Mark Twain? Yeah. She had to invoke a man. So, you feigned quitting while actually ahead. (Runs fast before Gruntessa hears that.)

Blogged.

I don't know if anyone raced for the "evil number" on last night's ONT, but I notice it's available, anew I presume, after housekeeping. Top comment is now 645. We need 21 new ONT comments, stat!

Considering AoS message numbers can change, why have message numbers at all? Oh, sorry, had a foggy moment there, trying to apply sense to pixyminx.

Trying to develop a new habit of checking nic links. Or, at least, went through and checked 'em in this thread. Consequently, I just subscribed, overduely, to newsfeeds for a couple of blogs

because I'm not already totally overrun with newsfeeds....

No Vic news? How will I know what's up in the world this morning?

Morrrrrrrrning, Glorrrrries!!!! I feel growly.

Stop me if you've heard this one. Last time I'll tell it.

Went to Mom's yesterday, and she insists we put on the horse race. (Her grandkids have got her a nice big-screen TV.) Hours sitting around, chatting enjoyably, but bored watching the yakking heads, the early race, more talking heads, clips from past races, on and on and on. When's the big race start?

Finally, the big race is on. And they're racing around the track. Annnd... Just as they're coming around the last bend, Mom's hand accidentally brushes the remote control and hits mute. Swiftly fumbling to un-mute, she changes the channel. Only moments to get it back, but moments too many.

Hours of waiting, only to miss the big finish? Priceless.

I love my mom. She can laugh at herself. I should be doing so good (or even alive) at 95.

On with the day...
