The first detection of intelligent extraterrestrial life will likely come within the next quarter-century, a prominent alien hunter predicts. (Space.com via Drudge)

hahahaha. We'll "detect" them when they let us!

Also, predicting 1st contact? Better luck predicting earthquakes.

United Worlds Watcher assigned to us: So, do we smack them with SMOD today?

UWW's Superior: Naw. Orders are, give 'em a little longer. I hear there's True Hope in certain pockets of the old USA. Anyway, not on Palin's 50th birthday.

Semantical gobbledegook. I read the article, and it was the most annoying hair splitting I ever read in my life. -NotCoach

...out in the not-uniformed world, that kind of fine-hair-splitting language might be considered a tad disingenuous, to say the least. -mindful webworker

I imagine, just as they couldn't figure what you were doing in the first place, then they couldn't imagine anything else in which one might carry water.

I had first been going to write, "back to Nixon," but if I had, I'd've deprived you of that one, so,

HBD Sarah Palin. 50 looks good on you.

I must admit, it was the HillBuzz guy's enthusing about Sarah that actually got me to look at her, and in turn she got me kind-of excited about politics again, no easy feat after my life of deep political cynicism going back to Johnson.

I got an actal thrill when I saw the pic of Palin And West meeting - I think the last time I felt that about politics was when my little sister and I got our pic taken with Senator and Pres candidate Barry Goldwater.

I'm more sober now, a terrible election later, but I remain reinvigorated about politics -- even hopeful (but then, I reside in a true-blue state of hope). Thanks, Sarah. Keep fightin', mama Grizzley.

Wow, I'm commenting more than I'm reading. I should try to shut up now....

"I was not ordered to stand down. I was ordered to remain in place...."

Sure glad we got that question all cleared up!

Now, I'm a lifelong civvy, mostly unfamiliar with the nuances of military discipline and jargon, but, out in the not-uniformed world, that kind of fine-hair-splitting language might be considered a tad disingenuous, to say the least.

EC, read this earlier & thought about it often today. As if theft isn't violation enough! Maybe they think they're hot $#!+; maybe they'll get cocky = caught. I pray so.

"Horrible EC. I personally support cutting of the hands of thieves, but apparently that's considered barbaric or something these days." -Lauren

My God, Lauren, that's barbaric! We have Constitutional guarantees against such cruel and unusual punishments.

We start with a little fingertip for first offense (depending on the amount stolen), and progress geometrically for subsequent offenses. Much more civilized.

My boss never tires of pointing out that throughout most of history, actors, musicians, and entertainers were usually considered to be lowlife scum by normal people, due to their loose morals and penchant for substance abuse.
It was only since the 20th Century and the rise of mass culture that they became multi-millionnaires and role models, due to their loose morals and penchant for substance abuse.

Well, thanks for the ONT content, which I enjoyed, except I skipped forward at about Woody on the couch.

File Allen's shticky movies with those books "they" say everyone should watch / read because it's so darned good. Except it isn't. Although, I can't entirely judge, not having seen a WA movie since. um. what was that cute girl's name? Diane something.

Hmm. I am apparently compelled to add:

In my parent's day, in general among their community, the debilitating habits were just plain old sex and alcohol. Call it Hefner Syndrome. They were the "swinging sixties" well before their kids were smoking banana peels and listening to degenerate acid folk-rock. Hefner Syndrome was Destroyer of marriages, Ruiner of families, and no respecter of political party or socioeconomic level.

If the next generation thought they could do better with throwing it all out and starting over from scratch — throwing out the baby of society's hard-earned institutions of marriage and community with the bathwater of hypocritical self-indulgent hedonism — it's at least partly because the teachers did not themselves have sufficient living respect or regard for those values they were supposed to convey.

But of course, predictably, the next gen proceeded to replicate that very hypocritical self-indulgent hedonism in their own free love and anything goes indulgences.

If some of us had to re-learn that respect for those Lost Values, from scratch, the hard-knocks way (with the help of a little shove from Above), well, then, as they say, the VW earned is appreciated more than the Caddy given as a gift.

The outworking socially is political and governmental, but the roots are always social and spiritual.

I'm sure glad y'all have all sorted out the whole social drugs liberty thing again, so I don't have to get involved. Got other things to do today.
