"Vast historical ignorance on display here. The Democrats own the racist policies of the South, Jim Crow laws, etc- lock, stock and barrel..."

Yup. See my #187, okay?

Many a Southern, and (my own experience here) more South-western, Democrat was, in their liberal beliefs, fundamentally conservative and small-government. Republicans weren't all that. The Reaganization, as it were, of the Republican Party here in Okla., going back to before Reagan was Pres, drew the bulk of those old Democrats over to the Republicans, where they've stayed.

Perhaps some other Oklahomans or Texans can confirm or refute my "vast historial ignorance" on this.

"Republican party backed civil rights in greater numbers than the Democrats and they did so because that is who we are." - Sven 10077

As I say, local demographics made for different alliances in some places.

It's kind-of like, today we see the thug unions destroying honest businesses, a reversal of the original opposition to thug businesses via employee collective bargaining. Communist infiltrators and cultural and media exaggeration of Evil Corporations notwithstanding. Or the shift in "liberation" movements from enfranchisement and rights to entitlement and privilege.

"What the heck is a conservative Democrat?"

Once upon a time in certain areas of the country, there was a specie of good-hearted old-fashioned small-L liberals, folks who believed, for example, that the little black kids had a right to learn to read just like the little white kids, and it was primarily the Republicans who stood athwart such ideas. That was the case in some places, more a consequence of local social demographics than actual party affiliations or platforms or principles.

My late across-the-road neighbor was one of those Yellow Dog Democrats. He fought for liberal ideals in the 1950s and early 1960s, for example, in his long role as county librarian. Nothing would ever have compelled him to vote for a Republican, and those of you who held your nose for McCain can sympathize at least with that, even if you can't see how that justified voting for the other side.

I have often wished I could sit down with him and discuss the current administration, whether he, like so many others, would finally admit that the Democratic Party moved away from him.

"...there hasn't been any conservative Democrats in Congress for decades." -Vic

Actually, Okla's last Dem congressman probably would qualify. He's gone, now, though, IIRC.

So it seems this John Kerry fellow might not be up to the task of being Secretary of State.

On this day in 1896 the first X-Ray photo was taken by H.L. Smith. It was of a hand with a bullet in it.

Held in hand, or penetrated?

Today is also the birthday of the infinitely patient Mrs. Webworker. She may not post here herself, but she has given me my better comments, and laughs and cries and prays along with the horde, via me. She also actually reads the AoS posts, so I can find out what those say....

She's the reader. I keep telling her she ought to get into the book thread.

Today's doodle (nic link) is a slightly manipulated photo of hers, and below that on the page is a photo of hers posted last year. I'd like to get her photographs up for the world to see. Maybe this year.

Sheila Jackson Lee
Rush Limbaugh

Wow. Weird. The odds on the two of them being born on the same day must be, like, 365.25:1 or so.

Children who watch too much TV may have 'damaged brain structures'
http://dailym.ai/1m0qJ7T

That's what happened to me. Anyway, that's my sticky tuit story.

Blame TV. Just like they always told us.

You'll put someone's brain out with that thing.

"nlike learning a musical instrument, for example, programmes we watch on TV 'do not necessarily advance to a higher level, speed up or vary. When this type of increase in level of experience does not occur with increasing experience, there is less of an effect on cognitive functioning....'"

Of course, this may be using BBC....

Oh, wait... wait...

"Scientists also cannot be sure whether missing out on activities such as reading, playing sports or interacting with friends and family as a result of watching TV could be behind the findings, rather than TV being directly to blame."

Or a million other factors... ho hum.

Good Morning, folks!

"Bomber, Your video on how you came home wrapped as a gift to your kids brought tears to my eyes....." -Carol

A few of those videos are a little disturbing. I sympathize when the kids seem more weirded than delighted when suddenly it's Daddy behind the Santa beard or whatever.

So, I was happy to see Bomber's was just perfect. The setup was simple, and the kids were great. And I'm not just saying it 'cause Bomber's 'family.'

Wow. Scanning off & on, I've ... caught up ... to #311, at least. I keep forgetting there's no Saturday dump. I thought I was going to have a whole 'nother thread to catch.

HEY! Santa brought me a toy late for Christmas. Targus wireless keyboard. Ten-fingered typing and full keyboard on the cell!

I'll try to restrain myself from abusing my augmented text-perpetrating capacity. But, wow, whatever peculiarities the little keyboard has, it's like coming out of paralysis or something to not be one-digit typing. Liberation!

How late is it? So late that the sun is well up. The Mrs fed the cats and made coffee (I could get used to that.) The morning thread is so old there'll probably be a Ben dump while I write this. I'm so discombobulated! I haven't slept this late in years. I hope this doesn't mean I'm getting old!

Which is to say, good morning, folks. What's up this A.M. and are all the glazed doughnuts gone?
