Oh that is so sad.

You want a big settlement to live on.

You'll settle for the store owner in jail.

You get a parade in the store owner's honor.

My husband was rejected by the VA yesterday because apparently we make too much money. Needless to say, he feels pretty betrayed by the country he so bravely served. - DangerGirl

Whether this is that country anymore seems key to the debate. America may be on the ropes, but not down.

I never served, but since I was pre-draft age, few things infuriate me as much as abrogation of responsibility toward Vets. Yet it seems the VA has always been too much "thanks for your service, now f--- off!" What used to be cheapness and indifference seems now to be policy.

"On this day in 1349 the Jewish population of Basil, Switzerland was rounded up and burned to death."

Damn! That's one with which I don't recall being familiar. I'd search for history, but, you know, searching for "Jew-killing" is like searching on "computer problem." I suppose "Swiss" could narrow it down.... :/

"After last night's podcast recording segment on marijuana...."

The podcasters were on the marijuana? Might have to listen to that one!

Good morning. folks. Got up thinking it was the middle of the night 'til I saw the clock said five 'til alarm. Now waiting for coffee to adjust my sense of what time it are.

Back from the store. I need to start a garden!

I was afraid I needed two screens for the night. "Honey, let me borrow your cell." But a quick glance suggests Maet's thread wins as the other one grinds to a halt before Midnight ET. Natural hoard momentum at work, I presume.

Oh. Now I'm going to go away again. Real life sure makes for a lot of interruptions!

Glad I could contribute.

I have a lot of sympathy for the hinderances to moving.

We were well-off, somewhat independent, and we caught some very fortunate breaks, but it still took years and a considerable cut in everything to finally get out as the kids hit teentime. Still paying in some ways, excellent hindsight on what we should've done differently... 20 years later.

Had a sweet life in Chicago. Never as good in those ways since. But, not in Chicago.

"All well on @AusAntarctic Aurora," team leader Chris Turney reported via Twitter.

I'm so relieved.

About the two ships free.

And the Coast Guard getting back on course.

Theological Thought for the day.

Are you discouraged, in need of strengthening of faith?

Need support in controlling habits destructive of the temple of the Spirit or threatening to personal relationships?

Need help recovering from a life of sin, or dealing with guilt and regret?

Are you in trouble and seemingly in need of a miracle?

To all these things, there are answers, from faith, through congregations, in scripture.

Even ignorance can be alleviated, if one is open to learning.

But one teaching chills my shriveled soul and causes me the sweats of terror. You've heard it often and I cringe whenever I hear it; you've seen the truth of it and I know it all too well from hard experience:

You can't fix stupid.

There's not a lot of hope for cured stupid I know of in religious literature. There was the guy who fell off his donkey on the Damascus Road, but I'm not sure he was more than just morally misguided and ignorant. The betrayer is a similar case. Interesting how each handled their enlightenment, Judas with suicide, Paul with leading the Christian church. Real stupid isn't about knowledge; it's about wisdom. If you can be wised up, by definition, not stupid.

"You can't fix stupid" makes me feel more hopeless than a Monty Monday Doom post. It's not that the Almighty couldn't - it's just, that doesn't seem to be on the standard menu of interventionist Deity actions.

People didn't just break out in song for no fucking reason complete with orchestral accompaniment.

Thus is one thing I liked about Enchanted - an in-context, if magical, excuse for musical outbursts.

I like musical flash acts, the seeming spontaneity of a chorus getting up and singing the Hallelujah Chorus in a mall. Echoes of brownshirts in beerhalls notwithstanding.

Our kids didn't know that people don't just bust out singing and dancing, 'cause we did... and still do.

This is why my kids weren't allowed in schools, either.
