"Clearly something has gone awry at the USS AoSHQ if this thread is appearing."

And if it's not, anymore, and there's no Sunday morning thread....

Dang Zork - I never could get past that room!

Ace of Spades HQ - the entertainment capital of the planet!

Say, how'd that Okla game go? I was underground all day, causing earthquakes.

Is there some sports thing happening? Here in Oklahoma, nobody pays much attention to that stuff.

Thanks for the post, Dave in Texas, and all the tales, links, & other comments.

The day only takes on greater significance as the decades roll on.

"We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone." I was much older before I realized that was racial code. "
It's not. It's to keep the Hobos and Assholes out.

Sure, them, too, true. But, you don't need a sign for that. No, 'round thse parts in those days it was racist. I know my peeps.

A few counties over, right into the 1970s, the little local rag had emblazoned on their masthead. "The sun doesn't set on a n****r in [name of town]."

I'm perversely in agreement sorta with Oprah (gurgle) that such attitudes can't die out fast enough. And glad to report that by and large things were vastly improved. Right up til the Great Divider won.

Miller knew what that meant for his friend. "His days are numbered," he thought. "I'm afraid it's going to be a lingering death." ...

...Ronald Endicott and Buddy Costin are buried at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl crater in Honolulu. Cliff Olds' body was returned to his hometown and buried in the city cemetery.

All their headstones say they died on Dec. 7, 1941

((and, in a sense, that was so))

Ah, well, humbly re-submitted from last thread, since it's on-topic and since I incorporated that same photo, the doodle webwork for Dec 7:

Anyway if I'm going to be there might as well offer something positive. - FenelonSpoke

Why? You could be cracking wise, smirking, making bad puns, saying 'first,' arguing broadswords vs crossbows, repeating well-worn memes, cussing out elected officials, insulting the cobloggers, counting backwards 'til 2016, damming SyFy, deriding Wil Wheaton, describing your latest medical procedure, griping about the weather, so many, many other possibilities.

Offering something positive is too weird.

Sunshine breaks through the thinning overcast and shines in my windows at last. Yay! I can take the cold much better when that big flamey thing is up.

And after tonight, no more single-digit temperatures in our fourcats. Hoorah for mid-continent climate chaos!

But then I think.. you couldn't refuse to make a cake for Jews if you were a Christian, right? Could you have a sign above your bakery "Whites Only"?
-Chi-Town Jerry

Yes. and Yes. I would hope such a place would die from customers' ostracism, but whether it did or not, that would be liberty for you.

When I was young, we frequented a burger place (pre fast food days) that had a sign by the door, "We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone." I was much older before I realized that was racial code.

My home town in the 50s was 'benignly segregated.' I remember the first time I saw a black couple in a restaurant after being away for years. Nicely dressed middle classish, but the guy had one of those pick-combs sticking out of his hair. I wanted to joke with him he'd forgotten something, or ask him did he know how dumb that looked, even mildly threatening (black man with pointy thing!). But that might be taken as racist. :/

I thought of that sign, though. No, sir, we are refusing you service, not 'cause you're black, but because you don't know how to dress or act. Which, actually, is the cultural reality underlying much of 'racist' discrimination. E.g., we aren't opposed to TFG based on skin....!

You either permit liberty or you enforce tyranny. My sympathies are anti-bigot - utterly with the blacks at the lunch counter - but just like defending the right of free speech for words I detest, politically I oppose government insisting anyone must serve anyone.

Mary Fallin (OK Gov #27) bdy.

HBD, Gov! She may not be full Tea Party, but she's not a RINO. At least at the (Okla) state level, we don't always have to hold the nose to vote Republican!
