Is the Stars and Stripes the best looking flag in the history of humanity, or am I just prejudiced? Country for which it stands and all that aside, just as a flag. As a kid, looking at Flags of the World in the big old Mirriam-Webster in the hall, I was always impressed at the contrast, how it seemed to stand so far above any other, and I still think so. Can't be the objective judgment of a lifetime of graphic arts study; must be this tear in my eye seeing it wave.

As I look back on our childrearing days and try to figure out what went wrong in their upbringing, I keep coming back to "The Little Red Hen." The book we had was the Muppets version or something. It was the usual story. Hen wants to make muffins, but at each step no one will help. Comes the finale, who will help eat them, when she should lock the doors and pig out with lots of icing on the haha it was cupcakes, no, no, instead, all is forgiven, and the little sluggards reaped unearned rewards.

I just didn't realize at the time how insidious it was.
