as a child, I thought adults knew what they were doing. Parents, businessmen, governors, Generals must have experiential wisdom (which would be imparted to me someday).
My parents divorced horribly, relatives sold the family empire, governors went to jail and, yes, as it turns out, even the top mil brass is stupid. At 60, I wonder whether we ever had adults.
