Vic, Mom smoked from 17 til ~70. Her 2nd husband, non-smoker, lived with lung cancer for years, but she puffed through it all fine. Then she got a bad cough one day, thought it was something worse, and quit cold. Like you, she says she still wants one, but her Will of Iron has never weakened. She's breathing fine now at 92.... and I thank God every day for that day she quit.

I knew she was heading toward quitting the day she said, "I know I have a drug problem." That definition changed everything. She grew up when smoking was glam, but she was NOT going to have a drug problem!

I got bored, not because it wasn't well said but because I've read it all 100 times before. I was serious asking for the concise solution.

I had a relative into the Divine Light Mission cult in the 70s. Neither reason nor emotion can counter LOYALTY. That's what we're facing: in-cult-uration. Deprogramming is a delicate art, and like people quitting smoking, the only real effective technique is deciding to quit. Whatever that takes. Usually something traumatic & personal.

Also; theoretically, I've had a website for a decade and a half and I've never had hardly any feedback to all my profound pontifications. If you're getting on stage, be prepared to be booed. But somebody else is lurking, but appreciative. So keep on singing!

My original major had to do with the idea that a future network of computers would totally change all our patterns of work, home, travel, education, and commerce. True. But so what? Fortunately, I was forced to change that to English... right before I dropped out.

Burned ou halfway thru weird Dave's thesis. What's the Cliff Notes version? Use emotion? How about sincerity? When you can fake that...

When my niece got a laptop, and found out it had a camera in it, she freaked out and put tape over the lens. I pointed out that her cell also has a camera and a mic and knows where you are. She was all meh!

cracked us both up. Can't believe I hadn't heard the like in the subsequent 30 years! and althouh I've done my best to blot out the assassin's name from my memory... this usage was so funny, I didn't even try.

Mindful Webworker Daily Doodle for today, linked in nic, is a lopsided freehand sketch of Nixon drawn during his 1973 I am not a crook speech. But the line I wrote down was Nixon saying, "consider them guilty until proven guilty." Later, a member of the press brought the misstatement to the Pres's attention, and Nixon thanked him. Even with the hideously anti-Nixon press, it was a different era. The gaffe was just a gaffe. Now, that line about not being a crook.... still makes me laugh.
