A last few links before I fade for the night...

The Last Weaver dies
Daniel Kreps, Rolling Stone

Fred Hellerman, the last surviving member of the influential Fifties folk group the Weavers, died Thursday at his home in Weston, Connecticut. He was 89.... Hellerman, along with the Weavers' Ronnie Gilbert, Lee Hays and Pete Seeger, helped spark the folk revolution of the 1960s thanks to their renditions of standards like "Kisses Sweeter than Wine," Woody Guthrie's "So Long, It's Been Good to Know Yuh" and Lead Belly's "Goodnight Irene." ...

Alberta Oil Peon: ...That's not an atypical depth for deep disposal wells. Usually, such wells are drilled to exploit a brine-laden permeable zone below any potentially productive formations. That's why deep injection wells do have a history of triggering small quakes. The good news is, triggering those small quakes probably releases, more or less safely, pent-up rock stress that, if left alone would eventually let go in a big quake.

Appreciate the (presumably) knowledgeable reply on this. I'd been wondering about the depth on that.

They (whoever They be) did, of course, immediately order shut-down of injections all around that area.

Mitey Mouse a/k/a Alberta Oil Peon - heh.

Saw a bit of vid of the '64 (?) Alaska quake today. I well remember that as one of the biggest events of my yout'.

Back. As threatened. Home is where the dog runs free.

Mitey Mouse: Did you get shaken up by the tremor, Mindful? How about the other OK Morons and Ettes?

'Deed, I did, Mitey. I went from sound sleep to standing in the front doorway in seconds as I realized it was a major (for 'round here) quake. No damage that I've noticed, but it was like a freight train was in the driveway.

I know Sherry McEvil reported she felt it but her overbuilt house was okay. Saw a report from a Moron who was unfamiliar to me down near OKCity that reported in as doing okay.

Got to brag to the relatives in Calif. that we got the shaker today.

Some folks don't realize that a quake here in the middle of the country can have far more devastating effects than out in places like Calif. Long waves travel far and carry lots of damage. Read they registered it up in Milwaukee.

Our 15 years in Chicago was the days of our early family creation, so we didn't get out as much as we thought we would when we first moved there, but we did get to enjoy some of its amenities. Mostly spent time in the Folk-y scene on Lincoln Avenue, where Milady had friends and her brother tended various bars. But...

Memorably went to Buddy Guy's club one night to watch David Bromberg (white guy sings the blues) who had, among other backup, a great black church choir. Great show.

Too bad they serve alcohol at all those places. I bet I could remember it all much better without the booze-dampening.

Thanks for the posts, Pete.

Well, my daughter and my mother are out in California tonight, no doubt whooping it up with all the family members who gathered for my mom's baby brother's 95th birthday party...

...and my best friend from grade school is here in town for the first time in ages, no doubt whooping it up with all the whatever reunion it is he's in town for...

...so I guess I'll drag my lonely, sad self home and go to bed in case there's another earthquake to rattle me tomorrow morning. At least tomorrow is like an extra Saturday.

I'll be back shortly, or longly, for one more comment catchup (mustard, mayo, lettuce, tomato, relish, pickle, and parsley) and goodnight... unless I amn't.

kbdabear: just played the kitten video and my two kittehs (both females) came running to investigate and are trying to find out where the kitten is...

I tried to interest the Office Cat, Merlin, in either the loud kitten or the hoard of cats at the door (was that from the pet thread?) video, but despite a few glances my direction, the videos couldn't compete with the large cricket that was jumping around.

After watching some vids over dinner, came back in to catch up on the comments.

This thread seems rather tiresome.

Since I liked the Caro Emerald vid linked to earlier, I follwed the one to "Caro Emerald - You're All I Want For Christmas" - and realized, I'm really not ready for winter. Had enough of 95+° summer days, yeah, but really not ready for winter.

-----------------

Among the videos I watched tonight, in honor of this morning's Okla 5.6'er, was "National Geographic_ the end of the world the terrible earthquake documentary" - not really end of the world, and nothing much I didn't really already know - just about the NW coast potential mega-shaker.

I have relatives in Oregon and Washington who think they're safe because they're inland, not on the coast. Hahaha. When the economy tanks and the refugees flood west because of the quake and tsunami, will we let them in down here in Oklahoma? ... Yeah, probably. Family, y'know.

I just like saying Juan de Fuca.

creeper: Tell me again why I decided to move to Oklahoma.

SE Okla, right? You should be fine down there. The quakes are all up here in northern Okla, and the twisters generally aren't down SE.

Real answer: Because Texas mandates ethanol gas. ?!?

After a couple of cups of coffee, I decided to fill out the felt-it form for USGS.

Questions like did pictures move, things topple on shelves, etc. Nope, our solid concrete house just thundered in sympathy with the quake wave.

I really need to get up and out and do things now. (Pours another cuppa.)

(Trying to force my brain into some thought besides the earthquake...)

Since Oklahoma's Presidential electors are always Republican, I don't suppose protest votes here matter. Although, this year is so weird, almost anything could happen.

Trump has grown on me. Like a fungus.

Good morning, Sherry! USGS is calling it 5.6. I might report it, but if they felt it in Houston & St Lou, I'm thinking my report won't mean much.

Our old concrete house seems to have withstood the shaking, although I had to wonder for a while as it was creaking and rattling.

Have a friend in Tulsa who had bow-koo repairs needed after that 4.5 a couple of years ago. Bet there'll be some damage from this one!

Now on USGS - 5.6 in Pawnee OK, about 75 miles SW of us. I see others here felt it. Hi, neighbors!

Howdy, Morons!

Yesterday I was reading how earthquakes in Oklahoma were getting fewer and farther between thanks to regulation of groundwater injection.

We just got the biggest quake I've ever felt.* Felt like a train was in the driveway. I went from solid sleep to standing by the front door while it went on. House rattled and shook for maybe as long as fifteen seconds.

7am CDST almost on the dot. Nothing in the news or USGS yet.

*I've felt two other quakes, biggest was something like 4.5, both centered down by Okla City. Just barely felt them, though. This one was either much bigger, or much closer. Or maybe somebody nuked Tulsa.

Daughter and her grandmother are out in California - I guess they sent us a souvenier.

I warned you I might be back. Took a long time to catch up on some 300 comments, but I did it. But, now it's time to check out. Got to take the car in early tomorrow to replace the bald tires so we can travel to Tulsa to see Blazing Saddles on the big screen. Maybe.
