Pistol Pete posted this video on PoliNation:

GP replied, in part, "Not many of these guys left."

"Not many of these guys left." After Mrs Ww and I watched the Chicago one (I won't re-post it; YouTube zSF0S50c9c0), we were noting the same thing, the all-too-rapidly dwindling numbers, all those wheelchairs & canes, and I recalled, when we were children, there were still a few Civil War vets alive.

Measured by short human lifespans, WW2 or the Civil War especially were a long time ago, but I remember, as a kid reading war comics, being impressed by how WW2 had only ended so few years back. Europe was still rebuilding! Lots of modern folks have a perspective about as long as the last TV season, if that, but I think we ought to have the perspective that the Cold War, the World Wars, historically, they just happened. The dangers are not long ago and far away. They're still here and now.

We’ve got your flashback. (uhh… sorry.)
Obama’s New Slogan: He’s Black! (wait…) He’ll stab your back?
Re-workings of earlier posters from this “got his back” track.

chrissythehyphenated wondered in reply, "Another possibility is that the Black Conservative voices, like ZoNation, are being heard and believed. I’m eager to see more polls come out about this."

It’s not a reformation of understanding among them. Like a lot of folks, they just don’t like a loser. And the reek of loser is on him.

chrissythehyphenated posted that Obama said the most important policy he could address in a 2nd term would be climate change.

Perhaps he meant the climate change going on in the political atmosphere. Certainly looks like the storm clouds are increasing over the ol’ _resident. Or is that headwinds?

“So far, no arrests have been made.” I ‘spect this Dad, catching the sicko in the act, has got total “heat of the moment” justification going for him. He faces a grand jury. He should get a medal.

What that little girl will have to bear cannot be assuaged by knowing that Daddy himself delivered immediate and ultimate justice, but in coming years, may that knowledge bring some comfort to her.

H&L: When did Trixie show up? Twenty seconds' net search was uninformative. Wikipedia's entry on H&L lists a Trixie collection book 1960. I would have been 8. Do I really remember Lois's pregnancy, and then the family expanded? I seem to recall wondering, will Hi & Lois be like Gasoline Alley, a real-time-aging strip? Will this baby age? Will the kids grow up? How interesting.

Except it wasn't.

Alas, Trixie, YOU WILL NEVER WALK!

What I said in the previous message about possibly previously posting goes for this one, too. I've watched this three times now, and I just can't keep from getting all teary. Why try?

Of all the horrors of war and national division during my high school and college years, over Viet Nam and the Draft and all, one of the most lingering, sickening memories was the abuse heaped on returning soldiers. It's hard to convey to my kids, it's so unbelievable. I wasn't clear about all the issues (in an era when our main source of information was Walter Cronkite), but I was always clear on this: It didn't matter what you thought about the war or politics or the draft, these returning men and women deserved congratulations, thanks, and to be given good jobs, and they got spit, derision, and ostracism.

That abominable history just makes scenes like this all the more sweet to watch, though.

On Arlo & Janis

Holy cow! I just got caught up on the dailies and there's some serious canoodling going on, even for that envelope-pushing Arlo & Janis! With young and oh my not married persons besides! What will mothers tell their children over the morning cereal and funnies? (What else? "Quit texting and eat your breakfast!")

JJ, re coloring: Thanks for your version. As Mark in TTown said, can you supply color tips when you have some special situation like this? The coloring of A&J dailies is a challenge. The fourth-wall-breaking strip had Janis's eyes with white circles in panel 2 and all fleshy toned in panel 3. I think you should throw a ripe old artist's tantrum!

Folks, A&J's new masters at GoComics say they love the strip exactly like it is, wouldn't change a thing. But can we make Janis a little, okay, a lot more zaftig? And more scenes of her in the bathtub? Also, just a thought, can we dark-knight Arlo a little bit, make him even more sullen and edgy and hey! how about sort-of dangerous? Actually, the baby-boomers are dying out; dump the old pherts and follow the kids from now on. But they should get divorced after Gene has an affair. Also, look here, we have a more realistic artist in mind for the strip, think you'll like the look. But wouldn't change a thing.

Hi to all the wonderful commenters whose comments I don't have time to read.

Rex Morgan: I kept waiting for the punch line, this was drawn by some Curmudgeon fan in response to the imitate-the-panel contest, or something. You forgot to mention that this isn't really the comic strip. Right? Right?

Val offered a picture for captioning. This offering isn’t exactly my best work, but it came to mind so I did it.

At first I thought, leave this one alone, he’s just playing with the kids. Then I decided to give him a passenger and ‘shopped the kids out of the picture. The caption “Driving Us Crazy” came to mind (after “Driving the economy” and other variations). I tried (but failed) to match the film’s font.

ONLY AFTER it was posted did I have it pointed out to me that the obvious response to this is “That’s racist!” The racial aspect just didn’t occur to me. It’s not even right, because Tim should be driving Barry for a proper parallel. If I’d thought about the black guy driving the white, I would’ve used Pelosi instead of Geithner. Or that ol’ dragon from the press pool, even better. And I’d've given O a chauffer’s hat.

Whoops. Oh, well.

"Should have backed off"?

In a neighborhood plagued by recent break-ins, a long-time dedicated and duly appointed watchman thought he saw a skulker.

Conceded, he got out of his car against the dispatcher's recommendation. You mean "back off" then, right? Tough judgment call, but he only intended to observe, not confront, arrest, or kill anyone. He was on the phone to the cops! He only tried to see where the suspicious guy went so he could tell the cops when they arrived.

When he went a little ways and didn't see the skulker anymore, he returned to his car. So he "backed off" there, right? He provoked Tray about the same as a Southern American preacher burning a book provokes Islamic extremist mobs to riot and murder in response.

"Backing off" wasn't good enough then, because suddenly the skulker is on top of him, smashing his head into the sidewalk, beating on him in mixed-martial-arts style, and possibly about to grab Zim's gun. I don't expect that's when you think he should have backed off? I understand he's totally torn up about what happened, as any caring person would be. Doing the right thing does not always produce warm tinglies. I'm sure he's thought and re-thought his every choice that night, and would have deep regrets even if this had not become a blown out of proportion media nightmare with his family threatened and his life ruined.

If this is the story, and I can cite a source for 'bout every bit of it, then the confrontation came to Zim and Tray paid the full price for his arrogance and violence. Zim may have made a poor judgment call. I thank God he did not pay the full price for his desire to watchfully serve his home and neighborhood.

[Try #3 to leave this:] Re-reading my post, I thought it might seem I was getting on GP’s case over that one “backed off” phrase. I sure wouldn’t mean to. I was just riffing on the difficulty of the whole situation.

Not just off-topic (which topic?) but no-topic.

Last night, I wrote a comment on another thread that became another long article. I hadn’t posted it. I had opened a page on my website to keep a copy but hadn’t saved it either. Then I got distracted, and at the end of the evening shut off the computer. Guess what!

You know what browsers need? The same thing Notepad has had since Windows 93: “You have unsaved text. Would you like to save it before shutting down?” Sheesh!

I appreciate the sentiment. Really! After McCain, Romney seems like a dynamo. After Obama, he seems like a savior.

But, if you're not holding your nose while voting, your sense of smell must be damaged. Three years of living in reek can distort the senses! The usually unscented "at least he's not Obama" actually seems attractively fragrant!

Mrs Webworker told me that Mark Levin said (so surely I have this exactly right) that the charges were all wrong in the first place. There weren't campaign contributions used as hush money, as it's been portrayed and as I had thought the case was. Instead, the prosecution was trying to say that because the hush money related to his status as a candidate, the hush money was campaign contribution. That's all I know about it. If so, the jury may have made a technically right decision. (I also will argue that the jury made the just — if not right — decision in the OJ trial, after I watched the whole prosecution portion.) It's awful when the prosecution fails, and actual guilt becomes irrelevant.

Not much question about what a snake Edwards is, as a candidate, a husband, and a man. He can now join Ayers in saying "Guilty as sin. Free as a bird." Would mentioning a far worse case of someone who shouldn't be free,
Brett Kimberlin, be too much topic-drift? :D

Ah, how well I remember the introduction of the Black Racer. Pretty much seemed like Kirby trying to recapture the Silver Surfer at first. Surf. Ski. Silver. Black. Whatever. Of course, Jack took him in an entirely different direction. Sweet memories of the hopeful early days of the New Gods.

Um, oh yeah. Nice pairing for this cover!
