Thanks, chemjeff. Planning to have a great year, starting with supper with Mom this evening. After that, whatever.

On birthdays, I always try to give bdy greetings to the mom, because she did all the work. And I'm 'specially grateful for my mom's work.

With some generosity in interpretation, I get 75% on the Heinlein list.

Among the ones I didn't get:

Being a middle-of-the-continent guy, I've never conn'd a ship, although as a kid I drove Dad's boat at the lake.

Ought to learn to butcher but haven't.

And to set a bone. I have the general idea....

And, I haven't died, gallantly or otherwise - came whisker-close a few times, didn't take.

Home late. Dutiful Dog is out in the yard barking up a storm. Got to catch up on the news, I guess, like coming in late on an ONT.

======

Yay for Otis that Bennie came home.

Otis, you need to add "http://" in front of your nic link - without that, it puts your blog on "acecomments.mu.nu."

As it should be. So perfect, so extremely rare.

True confessions.

So there was the terrible summer Milady left me. Only for a while she said, but then she got a job and extended her stay and I wasn't all that sure she'd come back...

...and there was this new disco in town that I went to check out even though I was not into disco a-toll. Heavy smoke, polyester, loud music, mirrored ball... crowded...

After checking the place out, I noticed a woman at the bar. (One of the bars.) Very nice-looking, my age, not a disco type, and seemingly alone.

This was before liquor-by-the-drink and you had to bring your own bottle the first time and join the club, else you were stuck with beer.

I can't remember exactly what I used for an opening hello, something innocuous, but she smiled and I asked what she was drinking - and when she said tequila, I right away asked her to "buy" me one.

We left the disco and just hung out that night - she was smart, charming, beautiful, and apparently liked me. Then we became... close friends, by the second date. My one and only successful meet like that.

Then she moved away. It was a close thing; I almost moved away with her, but...

It would never have worked. We were both Leos. (heh) My Destiny lay elsewhere. But, memorable several weeks.

After that, I flew up to retrieve Milady and re-start our lives and have our kids and grow old together.

When you come to a fork in the road, take it.

Captain Whitebread: I know I'm in a bad mood when even the compliance picks don't cheer me up.

Might not be you, Cap'n. I checked them out tonight... just to make sure they were compliant, of course... and I gotta say, usually they're 90% to 95%, but something about tonight's was only in the 60% range.* Maybe kbdabear was unloading some of the off-quality stuff... or maybe it was that they were posted so late... ?!?

cthulhu #417: ...Note that the Cavendish hybrid took the top spot after a different fungus killed-off a previous favorite hybrid.

Okay, it was the previous favorite hybrid I meant they should clone, not the Cavendish. And by cloned of course I meant genetically modified to not succumb to the same fungus.

Knock knock. Who's there? Banana.

Why can't they find an old peel from the more-delicious now-"extinct" Cavandish banana and clone them again?

I never saw them but the Flaming Toilet Paper Rolls toured briefly with the Flaming Lips. I heard they were hot.

Concerning pets in heaven:
Mindful comes closest to my thoughts on the subject. Pets are not in heaven for the sake of their own souls (which do not exist, probably), but for the complete happiness of their human. Is heaven filled with the souls of feral animals? Why would that be the case? However, where does that leave the wild rabbit in my backyard, for which I built a protective brush pile and put out vegetables. We would stare at each other with appreciation (and maybe two-way fondness), but no further relationship. We played an fairly important part in each other's lives. But, does it get the rabbit into heaven?

Stepping into the deep dog doo here... (Burt, some of us "overthinkers" need to think it through thoroughly.)

Animals do not develop souls of potential survival value as mortal humans do, via our relationship with the spirit.*

http://bit.ly/ub130-2-8

(Link goes to Urantia Book passage. I've been discouraged from posting about the UB here, so on this rare occasion, let me be clear: I don't expect anyone to believe anything just because that wild & crazy UB says so, but I reference it for anyone who would like to read its perspective. BTW, according to the UB, Jesus was born this day in 7BC. HBD, Jesus!)

*To me, this does not mean we can never find our furry four-footed friends again.

"Well" said the priest, "in that case, your dog will certainly be there." That sums it up so well.

The way I see it, we must, by experience, develop our souls to perfection, making a whole-hearted choice of the eternal life, in this realm or some Purgatorial next. Animals, by contrast, are already perfect as what they are. So, while they are not resurrected as we may be, they may in a sense be reanimated on high, as extensions of ourselves.

I say as extensions of ourselves because it would seem cruel for Faithful Fido to be in Heaven forever waiting at the gates for a human who failed to choose eternal life.

Frankly, I hope I don't have to spend eternity feeding and cleaning the catbox for all the cats we've had. That's a whole lotta cats!

Hi again. Home again.

Some mentions upthread of The Day After. Reminded me that the series The Americans is set in the '80s. Always on the lookout for anachronisms, but they do pretty well on keeping it period.

There's some funny things. Lots of spies-using-pay phones. Pay phones!

Last season, they got up to where The Day After played. Everyone was watching it, FBI guys, the spy family, the Commies. It brought home the impact the show had.

Besides Day After, that period had lots of Nuke War talk. Every newsmagazine cover had it. Worse than the 1960s, at times. That was when Milady and I decided there weren't gunna be no nuke war, really, and trusting in God we proceeded to joyously engage in creating a 2nd kid. Be careful what you ask for. We got twins.

Our first was born in '81. The twins a few years later. Much of the decade was spent at home. Some of it's a blur. Landlording in Chicago - tales I could tell!

Not much into video games, but spent a lot of time on CompuServe, first on the Radio Shack Model I and then on the PC-AT.

I remember somewhere in there was a comic book explosion, lots of independents, small companies, and even the big 2 had some good stuff. Until the kids got expensive, I bought almost everything. It's all in long boxes down in the catacombs.

And disco gave way to actual music again. I remember that.

But mostly, diapers and high chairs, and eventually swimming lessons and pushing bicycles until they learned.
