The breadth of topics in the book thread always amazes me. But, before I refresh and get more comments...

In reply to my Invulnerable story pimping 2 weeks ago, weirdflunkyonatablet #287 replied:

I just finished it. I have no idea what you call that or what you're supposed to do with it but I liked it.

If anyone here is thinking about reading MW's story don't get hung up with the cartoon beginning, it changes to something else entirely.

Like said, I liked it.

I think this is an Optimal Review. I chuckled, because, "no idea what you call that or what you're supposed to do with it" is exactly how I felt about it since I did it. Glad you liked it, WeirdFlunky - that is the main thing.

As I've said before, I started out doing sketches as if for a graphic novel (comicbook), but very quickly I felt my cartooning abilities weren't up to the serious narrative task, and moreover the narrative started spewing forth almost faster than I could handwrite it, so it starts with the cartoon sketches and then goes to text.

The cartoon part is mostly-raw scans of my original sketches, only the lettering computer-typeset to improve readability, and some cleanup and shading added. So, I said a character in the story did the art.

The whole thing was kind-of a first draft, but I published what I had as-was, just because I may never get it beyond that. I do have a bunch of additional illustrations I've been meaning to tip in - finished color pix as opposed to the b&w sketches. One of these days when my time isn't utterly consumed... with reading AoS threads....

@votermom #7: ...I was looking for a dad book to put on the blog and found a 1953 little golden book...

That was cute.

Just got a text from Firstborn Daughter wishing me a happy. That's one (of three). But, not like I'm keeping score!

...aliens discovering just how good it is to have humans along on their ships...

Why, that's right out of my Invulnerable story!

Okay, not exactly...

(Not funny unless you read it, I suppose. Back to reading the post...)

Greetings, moron literati!

I didn't get to participate in last week's book thread. Was busy renunioning with relatives.

Two weeks ago,
http://acecomments.mu.nu/?blog=86&post=363844#c25331609
under the guise of discussing the trials and tribulations of creativity, self-publication, and self-promotion, I once again pimped my Invulnerable short story. (link to in nic)

I got two replies, one from @votermom, one from weirdflunkyonatablet, but didn't get back in time to respond, so I'm going to reply to those today.

Gonna stop and read today's post first, though.

(take the square root, multiply by Pi... ummm...)

My dad has been dead three times longer than I was years old when he died.

My dad died suddenly (after years of poor health) at age 50, fourteen years younger than I am now. I never got to know him, as an adult. Considering how my older brothers got along with him, that might have been good, but he meant a lot to young me.

I am dad now. Wonder how many of our three kids will figure out what today is and at least send me a text?

Vic: RINO Ryan is castigated...

I'm pretty sure Obama already took care of that.

Oh... wait... you said castigated.

Vic: ...in SC HS students will have to take a course on the founding documents.

Hmmm. Does it specify how they will teach about it? Like, racist, misogynist, obsolete dead white man scribbles?

Vic: The first new nuclear reactor in two decades has gone on line in TN.

Sounds like good news. How did that manage to get through the maze of ecological and other regulatory hinderances?

Now if only we had, like, some big underground facility wherein to stash the leftovers.

Howdy, morning people.

The Vic Report is back! All is in balance again.

Vic's unannounced absences run just long enough for me to start worrying.

So, what's the over/under that there will be armed conflict in the Middle East this year?

/snrkd so hard I hurt myself

Speaking of war, a group of knife-wielding men attacked a train station in southwestern China on Saturday, killing at least 29 people and injuring more than 130 others in what Chinese officials called a terrorist strike....

But, no guns were involved, so, not news....

Not long after we moved to Oklahoma, we were driving the family up the highway to eat at a restaurant, when I noticed the sky in the West was getting sickeningly green and dangerous looking.

Turned on the radio, heard a description that suggested a twister might be heading right toward our destination. Turned the car around, got back inside, and gave the kids their first lesson in where to be in a tornado threat.

Skies cleared, and we drove back to the restaurant. The funnel had gone right down the cross-street, twisting trees and business signs - low-level tornado, but still did a number on property.

Got to the restaurant and the young hostess came up to seat us, as if all were normal, except, her eyes were as big as saucers. A vision of adrenaline aftershock.

She told us the crew had hidden in the walk-in freezer,* although some customers just sat it out in the (glass-all-directions) dining area. Oklahomans!

*While walk-in freezers are not actually recommended, I do recall the Tulsa tornado of '74 (the one that was a block and a half from my house) destroyed the Braum's down the street... leaving only the counter, stools... and the walk-in where the employees huddled. So, not recommended but better than nothing.

Belated response department

Me: ...Split the differences and come to Oklahoma...

AshevilleRobert: No thanks. I want to live in a place where there's 0 percent chance of me coming home from work to find out "Home" and 1/2 mile in each direction has disappeared into the guts of a funnel cloud.

The dangers of tornadoes is overblown. Why, in all my years living here in the Land of the Rednecks, I've never had a tornado come closer than a block and a half.

Anyway, there are secrets to staying non-whirlwinded. Like, for one, don't live near Oklahoma City....

Got home. Always nice to see all cats accounted for. Found a battery for the mouse. Can turn off the f#@(*# touchpad. So far so good. Now to fix a drink.

I think my mouse's batteries are dying.

Guarantee if it's AA or AAA I need, I'll have the other.

Bitter Clinger: ...From that time forward he was very pleased to see me at any time and would jump up on me and sleep in bed with me. He know who'd saved his bacon.

Well, it was the cat's 2nd (or more) life, so maybe it got kinda re-booted.

Nice tail, seriously.

Regarding medicating cats (which is much more fun topic than others being kicked about tonight)...

The old gray female kitteh had something going on around her tail, losing hair off her butt and the tail where it attaches. She was miserable.

Milady started applying something to the spot, and giving her medicine orally. Cat wiggled and objected at first, but in a couple of days must've figured out it worked, because she would come jump in Milady's lap at medication time and cooperated quite nicely. Cat got better, BTW.

Animals, domestic and wild, don't always know what we're doing to them, but it's really neat how, when they figure out we're helping, they get it, and cooperate.
