That kind of confusion of purpose described in your comment seems more insidious than a "pet evil." At least, in my thinking, if one tends to know one's flaws, at a relatively conscious level, there's that, "I really should cut back / quit / change," regardless of delay from weakness of will. The kind you later say, wish I'd stopped sooner.

What your quote describes seems more of the "way that seems right... but leads to death." Almost the opposite of the "I need to reform" shame, an "I don't need to change" pride.

A matter of degree, perhaps.
