Country Tales

Two nights ago, I was following Milady home. There was a car between us. I see Milady slow, stop, pull over to the side. Other car speeds around her, then she pulls back out and goes on. When we got home, I found out what I didn't see. Milady says, "You know, deer look a lot bigger when they're right in front of you on the road!"

Respect the large mammals! Also, pro tip, don't pass a stopped car at night 'til you see why they're stopping!

Last night. First there was a doe right by the side of the road!. Just a few feet further on, as we approach a small bridge, an owl swoops down from high to our left, angling downward over the bridge, down into the gulley on our right. Figure he's using car lights to spot game. Cool, but we didn't get that great a look at him.

About a mile further on, creeping through that sometimes flooded stretch we call the bottomland, a major critter crossing, we see another owl. He zooms in from the right, lands on the road in the opposite lane, then takes off again, back across our lane, missing our windshield by, oh, a good ten feet or so. We got a magnificent look at him!
