Highways as make work programs

"It's almost like its a make work program for the unions, rather than making actual improvements." —Jen

No "almost" about it, tho.

Somewhere many moons back I ran across an article on how they build up roadbeds in Europe vs in America. The difference is in the resultant maintenance schedule. There are vast differences in American soil, weather, traffic, but fundamentally we build them weak on purpose.

We could also make a long-burning light bulb. Planned obsolescence is a disease of businesses. & unions.
