WTF happened to Opera?

Before I depart, I just want to complain:
WTF happened to Opera? They were rolling along, doing fine, then suddenly, insanity. A survey, you say, Hat? Fine, but just begs the question what would induce them to do, or follow, such a thing.
Bad enough when software companies sell out to other companies that kill of the product, but this is more like suicide.
