Morning, glories. I finally showed up. Now y'all can quit wondering what happened to me.

Gun shop opens despite resistance article:

...Kathy Witkowski-Jacobs, a self-identified "hippie" from Arlington who requested to be referred to as "Mama Nanny Cat Dog," was the lone protestor [sic] to show up outside the store. At her feet was a plate of food somebody at NOVA Armory had brought out for her...

Heh. And "Mama Nanny Cat Dog" says gun owners should have their heads examined.

Well, I'm excited. When I wake up, it'll be a new day. Like a package under the tree, I can't wait to see what's in it! Sun? Rain? Vic news? Nuclear holocaust?

And so, g'night.

O my God, I trust in you: let me not be ashamed, let not mine enemies triumph over me. Yea, let none that wait on you be ashamed: let them be ashamed which transgress without cause. Show me your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths.

Worst problem I had with my name, alphabetically, was the two fat & stinky guys I got seated between in gym class in Jr High School.

cthulhu: [likes my comment so much, repeats it twice ] Another technique worth considering is driving to the nearest police/highway patrol station.

Yeah, but this was open highway 25 miles either way from the nearest police station, and before cell phones, too.

Sometimes you're just on your own.

An online encounter this weekend reminded me of the one and only time, many years ago, that I had a serious road rage encounter.

Some guy took a dislike to me for no reason I knew. Started tailgating, pulling up beside me to make threatening gestures, pulling in front of me and slowing down. Serious hassling and I couldn't shake him.

I had the family in the car and so it was concerning.

I finally pulled off onto the shoulder and stopped. He stopped a ways in front of me. He got out of the car and started walking back.

Instead of getting out and bumping chests, at the last possible moment, I just pulled our car back onto the road and took off at a good clip. I took the first exit and drove the back way home. Clean getaway.

Like I said, I have no idea what the guy's provocation was, but a) I'm glad he didn't have any kind of weapon, and b) that kind of thing really leaves a bad taste in the mouth for the rest of the day.

I try to be sympathetic to folks with anger issues - got enough of my own - and errors of perception/negative interpretation of events - I've had lots of experience with that, too, mine and others' - but it's not all that easy to be forgiving when the fam is threatened!

Home at last. Mornings and evenings are good. If only all the stuff in between could be.

Unusual day. Milady was under the weather and slept much of the day, but doing okay now. Kinda changed up our schedule. Sleep is a good thing. Gonna try it myself pretty soon.

Presume FenSpouse found his passport then, eh? FenSon's big adventure! Hope he has loads of good time there.

There are things in the ONT post I don't understand.

Like So It Turns Out That Jessica Lowndes and Jon Lovitz Are Not Actually Engaged --- why? Not why aren't they actually engaged... why is this here? (Of course, I have no idea who Lowndes is.)

Back when we didn't send our kids to school, there wasn't a lot of homeschooling support. It was legal, in Illinois, and we made sure it was in Oklahoma before we moved here. There were some teaching materials to be had, but mostly we just winged it. Everything was a teaching opportunity, going to the zoo, current news, whatever.

Apparently, we didn't do too badly. When our sons had to take literacy tests to get their driver licenses, they both were well above Senior High School level. Even though one son, unfamiliar with test-taking, marked his answers on the question book not the answer sheet. The test-giver didn't care.

By contrast with our lonely experience, my young cousin (1st, once removed) has home-schooled all his kids in a really supportive environment. Lots of mom at the kitchen table study, but also they participate in sports and other things with public schoolers and other home-schoolers, and church associations. One of his just made National Merit Scholar.

Dang: ..My kid came home with a science class paper that had the definitions of "mass" and "volume" flip flopped...

Since we lived in Chicago at the time, we knew we weren't going to put our kids in public schools. But we did put our daughter in a Catholic kindergarten class. Kindergarten - how hard is that?

She came home one day with a mimeographed paper which had been printed flipped left-to-right. (Not even sure how that could be done!) She had dutifully put her name in, backwards, at the top.

We took the paper in and brought this error to the teacher's notice. The teacher waved it off like a complete space cadet. Ha ha no big deal.

End of that experiment in education.

Since 1980, the number of Americans who believe in God has decreased by half and the number who pray has declined five-fold. Has America lost its faith? ... "Most previous studies concluded that fewer Americans were publicly affiliating with a religion, but that Americans were just as religious in private ways. That's no longer the case, especially in the last few years."

[Several long paragraphs of my thoughts about this excised because tl;dr attention spans. Maybe I'll put it on my website or something later.]

Texted my son, did you know this? He said he found out a year ago when someone at work went around pranking folks' computers.

Mentioned that it depends on your graphics card, and doesn't work on his current work desktop.

Wonder if it will work on my old XP desktop.

FenelonSpoke: God must give us kids to help develop our patience.

Speaking as one who just spent Easter afternoon with my three allegedly-adult offspring...

I thought God gave us kids just so we parents could get a taste of what he has to put up with, raising us.

Sayyid: The proper response from the testing agency in this situation would probably have been throwing out the question entirely.

That was my conclusion as well, rather than making a big fight out of it, admit the lack of clarity. But, no, that would be easy and sensible.

Must be time to feed the pets.
