Zip Codes

WriterRuth > Good God. I'm older than zip codes. ZIP CODES, fer cryin' out loud!

Sheesh! You make that see like a long time ago!

I'm old enough to remember when they were imposed upon us. I remember realizing those additional mysterious two-digit numbers that big cities used were the last two digits of the new codes, like when the phone numbers expanded from three digits (said to the operator) to seven digits (dialed) and my pal's phone number got four new digits in front of it. Fascinating to a kid who liked systems.

That all of us had to conform to some superficially-imposed number system, rather than the system continuing to serve the public's methods... one more sign of moving from government for the people to people for the government. For big and bulk mailers, understandable. For ordinary letter writers, outrageous.

But it was earthly sixties. Who would object to our brilliant government's wisdom?! Other than Mad Magazine?

Eradicate the postal service!

So, what else we been talkin' 'bout?

Morning, Glories.
