Thanks, Maetenloch!

Alas, read (mostly) the post, scanned (somewhat) some comments, but now ready to zzzz so ((waves at horde)) no time to interact. My loss, your gain. :\

I lurked a lot today on many blogs including here of course. Amazing the web of lives entangled in 9/11. Almost like one family.

Something's gotta give.

"I watch this, and it all comes right back. Trembling, quaking rage. Good. It’s a consolation to know that I’m still human – at least a little. Please, God, let me never become like the blunted, impotent wretches of western civilization, self-righteously indifferent to evil, desensitized, unable to sort reality from the flickershow."

Morning, Glories. Tried to go back to sleep, but, brain started cogitatin' and sleep was doomed.

Missed the Cockroach in Chief's show last night. Did he
a) Ask Congress for a formal declaration of war against the non-Islamic Islamic State?
b) Say the word "I" more than ten times a minute?
c) Promise to give more arms to our enemies?

Morning, Vic. Thanks for the news. Howdy, JJ, Mr Dave, VIA, Fenelon, Carol, Anna, sven, buzzion, insomniac, Grampa Jimbo, phoenixgirl ... everybody.

Instead of the cell this morning, I'm on my cousin's notebook (for which I'm supposed to be doing updating/maintenance). A real(ish) computer at home for the first time in years. A little faster reading on a bigger screen, once I mastered Win8. Okay, there seems to be no mastering Win8, just enduring and working around it.

Whatever the Jihadis may pull today, they're still a bunch of punks!

It was all over by the time we heard about it.

We spent a casual morning, disconnected from the world as we were then in our country home, with our three young adult children.

Mrs and I left them and drove into town. As we cut through the suburban area, I flipped on the radio, which was tuned to Rush Limbaugh.

A substitute announcer first assured us that Rush was all right, stranded at some airport in Florida. That seemed odd. Then there was news of refineries in Mexico being shut down. The skin-crawl of anticipation began.

Finally, CBS or some network newsie came on with this most succinct, memorable, and devastating summary of events:

"The World Trade Centers are gone."

I didn't know how, no details at all yet, but I knew who. "They did it. The bastards really did it," I cursed, probably using a few more choice words.

We turned around, back to home, where I told the kids, basically, this is your Pearl Harbor. Everything is different now. Your life will be measured by before and after this date.

We opened up our mostly-failed-and-closed cafe for the day, watching cable news replay the collisions, the burning, the fall of the buildings, over and over. Details about the Pentagon and Pennsylvania filtered in.

There was one other thing I thought, as soon as I heard the sum of events. I thought, is that all you bastards got? Punks.

I don't care what they get away with. They're still a bunch of punks.

Eesh... I never thought twice when Vic mentions brown. Am I old or just not up on my linguistic nuances, penumbras, and eminations?

About time for me to quit lurking and pretend to some kind of working.

Erm, heh - bits of it from childhood, inspiration in previous comments, a touch of research on invariant nouns et al., but just baked originally at #177 on AoS.

The plural of mouse is mice,
a flock of goose is geese,
but more than one house is not hice,
nor a flock of moose known as meese.

You might have a couple of beers,
you might wish a hundred wishes,
but you can't see a couple of deers.
but a hundred fish are not fishes.

Yet if I have two scissors, and I give you one,
each now has scissors. English is fun!

Something on the front page is seriously screwing up my phone and giving me errors. Started last week.
Posted by: DangerGirl

Every time I refresh the front page, for a couple of days, I get a download-file-or-cancel notice. So far, I've always remembered to cancel. So far. Someone commented yesterday they had downloaded a file. If your browser isn't blocking it or telling you about it, you're probably downloading it.

This is attached to some ad, I presume. Possibly harmless, but certainly annoying.

Just one more exciting "feature" on this smarty modern-military (FABulous) slog. Expect administrative response tantamount to an Issa committee's actions....

My father, myself, and my children,
all played beneath that tree.
Now just a stump remains,
where the old oak used to be,

Shade and beauty gone in a day.
No leaf or branch, just sky appears.
A mighty breach in our canopy.
Replacement takes a hundred years.

Backwards Boy, and others familiar with the Nauga:

Back in 1946 or 1947, my grandfather tried keeping some of the tamer strain of Naugas on his ranch in Oklahoma. They had to be fenced off from the cattle; the fence had to be one strand of bob war higher, but they didn't eat much, being lean.

They did like snakes, even poisonous ones. They'd sit on them, squish them, before devouring them whole.

The semi-domesticated weren't all puffed out and smooth, they were wrinkled and folded like a Shar-Pei, bred for extra hide.

But, it turned out, the Oklahoma summer heat made the hide stiff and unworkable, where exposed, and the humidity caused mouldering under the folds.

More importantly, the Nauga's digestive systems had some trouble digesting the native grasses, and several of my grandfather's hands threatened to quit because of it.

So Grandpa sold off the Nauga herd at a loss, and didn't profit like others, later, when Monsanto bought them all up.

I read on the interwebz that at the Monsanto Nauga ranch in Brazil, native-environmental groups are protesting that escaped Naugas are disrupting the Amazonian ecosystems.

I don't care; it just warms my heart to think of those little wild Naugas, running free, establishing new colonies along that mighty river, squishing and devouring snakes.
