…On this day in 1917 the Senate voted to limit filibusters by adopting the cloture rule. Originally it required a 2/3 majority vote to invoke cloture. In 1975 the Democrats voted to make it 60 because they had 61 communists in the Senate. It also goes by the 'nuclear option' now when Democrats want to change cloture to 51 votes. That is used by the Democrats but seldom by the Republicans.…

…On this day in 1936 in violation of the of the Treaty of Versailles, Germany reoccupied the Rhineland. The 'allies' did nothing which further emboldened Hitler.

…On this day in 1820 the Missouri Compromise was signed into law by President James Monroe. The compromise allowed Missouri to enter the Union as a slave state, brought Maine into the Union as a free state, and made the rest of the northern part of the Louisiana Purchase territory slavery-free. This was hailed as a great compromise but it only delayed the inevitable for a few more years. It did not satisfy the firebrands on either side.

…On this day in 1770 the infamous Boston Massacre occurred. Five Americans were fatally shot by British troops in an event that would contribute to the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War five years later. Contrary to popular myth, the colonists actually provoked that attack by crown troops.

…On this day in 1794 the 11th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was passed by the U.S. Congress. You don't hear too much about this in these days. What the 11th says is The Judicial power of the United States shall not be construed to extend to any suit in law or equity, commenced or prosecuted against one of the United States by Citizens of another State, or by Citizens or Subjects of any Foreign State. However during the liberal court days the court ruled that the States did not have sovereign immunity when being sued by the federal government.

…On this day in 1882 Queen Victoria narrowly escaped an assassination attempt by Roderick McLean in Windsor. The courts ruled him as innocent but insane which resulted in a change in the law of GB. Such people were ruled guilty but insane thereafter.

…On this day in 1805 Justice Samuel Chase was acquitted at the end of his impeachment trial by the U.S. Senate. He was impeached on grounds of letting his partisan leanings affect his court decisions. This was part of Jefferson's efforts to end the power grab by John Adams and it failed. Thus we have SCOTUS and the federal courts today who let politics effect EVERY decision they make.…

…On this day in 1919 President Woodrow Wilson signed an act of Congress establishing the Grand Canyon National Park. Notice how at this time it took an act of congress to set aside federal land as an untouchable national park. Ten years later under Silent Cal it was done with an executive order and during the last Obama reign of terror millions of acres were set aside via executive order.
