Yesterday more than 740 migrants were rescued in the Mediterranean by the Italian coast guard and German, Irish and British naval vessels. Today some 3,300 migrants were rescued by Italy. The Greek interior minister says that it is not possible for his country to make its next debt payment to the IMF by the deadline next month; the money simply isn’t there. Greece is looking to make an arrangement with its creditors in order to get the next tranche of bailout money. Meanwhile, the latest polls say that the Greek public supports the government’s anti-austerity policies, but wants to retain the euro as its currency.

In Tensta, a culturally enriched suburb of Stockholm, a mob of “youths” attacked a police patrol with rocks and Molotov cocktails. Police were forced to fire warning shots into the crowd. The rioters, said to be mainly Somalis and Kurds, were apparently upset that police had started cracking down on crime in their neighborhood.
In other news, the Islamic State claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing at a Shi’ite mosque in Saudi Arabia, and promised more attacks targeting Shi’ites.
