The big news of the day is that the Turkish military attempted to oust President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in a coup. Mr. Erdogan communicated with his followers by iPhone and skype from an undisclosed location, telling them to take to the streets to resist the coup, which they did. A number of explosions were heard in Ankara and Istanbul, including air strikes on the parliament building. There were reports that Mr. Erdogan attempted to leave the country, but was denied permission to land in Germany. Forces loyal to the president eventually got the situation under control (at least for now), and he returned to Istanbul where he was greeted by ecstatic followers.

In other news, the statistical bureau of the German government reports that Germany took in a record two million migrants last year.…
