…On this day in 1856 Congressman Preston Brooks of South Carolina severely beat Senator Charles Sumner of Massachusetts with a gutta percha cane in the hall of the United States Senate. Historians say the beating was because of his anti-slavery speech. While that is partially true, the reason for the beating was that Brooks considered the speech to be insulting to his cousin.…
