A former member of the Nation of Islam shot and killed three police officers in Baton Rouge before being shot to death himself. Several other policemen were wounded, one of them critically. The killer had made Internet videos raving against “crackers”, but Baton Rouge police say there appears to be no racial element to the murders.
In other news, the latest information on Mohamed Bouhlel, the man who committed the jihad massacre in Nice on Bastille Day, is that he sent €100,000 home to Tunisia just before he became a shahid. The news feed is almost non-existent tonight. Perhaps our tipsters were all trapped in Incirlik Air Base when the Turkish government cut the power.
The big stories of the day concern the aftershocks from the attempted military coup in Turkey. Thousands of soldiers and judges have been rounded up and arrested. At least one soldier was allegedly beheaded by a pro-Erdogan mob on the Bosphorus Bridge in Istanbul. Turkish authorities cut power to the Incirlik Air Base used by NATO forces and refused to allow any flights in or out. The German defense minister was reportedly denied entry to the base.
In other news, French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said that Mohamed Salmene Lahouaiej Bouhlel, the perpetrator of Thursday’s truck-jihad massacre in Nice, appears to have been radicalized rapidly, thereby escaping the notice of the security services.…

The big news of the day is that the Turkish military attempted to oust President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in a coup. Mr. Erdogan communicated with his followers by iPhone and skype from an undisclosed location, telling them to take to the streets to resist the coup, which they did. A number of explosions were heard in Ankara and Istanbul, including air strikes on the parliament building. There were reports that Mr. Erdogan attempted to leave the country, but was denied permission to land in Germany. Forces loyal to the president eventually got the situation under control (at least for now), and he returned to Istanbul where he was greeted by ecstatic followers.
In other news, the statistical bureau of the German government reports that Germany took in a record two million migrants last year.…
