When you test drive your dream car
What great cars! The fins! The grills! Bench seats! The ginormous interiors! I want a Wayfarer! Or an "all steel" Plymouth Suburban.
And 25¢/G gas to drive all that steel around.
I'm doing a lot of driving this week, as we travel to The City for Mom's 97th Birthday party. Already logged 2hrs on the road today. This is a good warning to stay alert!
Some funny classics, many pix new to me. Great collection as always.
Favorite new-to-me is the escalator! Because, look! Got all the way to the bottom!
TexasDan #243: ...Would have hit my son on the rider's side, but my wife hesitated for no particular reason when the light turned green....
So glad they didn't get hit.
Sherry McEvil: AMC Hornet (Insect, not an animal)...
Well, an insect counts as "animal" versus vegetable or mineral in the first guess in 20 questions.
zettai: "...drove a brand-new car down a mostly dry and rocky stream bed for some distance..."
Bob in Houston #581: "...over the Galveston causeway because the idjit driving got CS powder in his eyes..."
Dumbest (non-sexual) think I've done in a vehicle?
Glad "non-sexual" was specified....
...push/pull on a steering wheel shaft column now...
Whatever it's called.
Hand signals - haven't used them in ages, but they are still handy for that tiny handful of respectful bicyclers.

The alternator died today on the van. I suspect it was jealous because we just replaced the starter. What will #3 be, I wonders.
*
We just had to replace the starter on our van. Best we could recall, this is the first time we've done so on that van. But we sure have replaced a lot of starters over the years.
Me: Someone in the Galactic Horde Knowledge Base will be along to answer, possibly before I can post this.
Haha! So MANY good replies!
Alberta Oil Peon: ....electrically-conductive cement...
Breezing along, sipping this wine, reading comments, when suddenly it hits me: wtf am I doing?
Am I too late with the car/stripper name?
Well... long ago, when I was a much bigger idjit than I am today....
Also, "...pickup ...fishtails through the ditch between my rig and the stranded cars..." Whew!
torquewrench: ...she was going waaaaaaaay too fast in the first place.
And hitting the brakes for no reason. Compound bad choices.
JEM: Modern products are much more carefully assembled, the engines and electricals and transmissions and etc. are generally more reliable and MUCH longer-lasting.
qdpsteve, 'way back up there somewhere: if you could own for free, one pristine/perfect/new model of ANY car EVER manufactured, which would you take?
Amazing to me that these geezers with their classic cars can have them in pristine, immaculately restored condition... yet some seem unable to fix the muffler!
Grey Fox: Speaking as someone who does where a hat as a regular thing, it is a real pain to remember to take it off where appropriate and carry it around.
MrScribbler: If you know what a Honda 600 was, you can imagine how much space it offered for interpersonal relationships....
Subjects: childhood memories, Mustang (Ford), relationships
Looking at that pic MP4 posted of Cooper and Powell... Note that wide running board on the car. You could drive along with a small army standing on there!
"Don't drive like my brother."
"Don't drive like my brother."
This is a most excellent tribute. Thanks, bob!
Pete: "…I have so many things today I could set a record for the longest thread on this blog. I will,of course, practice restraint."
Pete: "You don't drive a Cobra; you just stare at it."
Actually, Monday started yesterday for me. We were heading down to have a family lunch with my mom. Hit the highway, and the car started shimmying, only noticeable over 60mph.
